I. Introduction

Reading is an activity characterized by the translation of symbols or letters, into

words and sentences that have meaning to the individual. It has been indispensable

tool to equip oneself with significant ideas contributory to the development of student’s

intellect, character, and personality. The ultimate goal of reading is to be able to under-

stand written material, to evaluate it, and to use it for one`s need as it has accompa-

nied every person`s pursuit for discoveries and advancements.

Hence, English teacher today face this pressure of moving students toward a

high level of proficiency in reading with comprehension. Thus, the main aim of the ad-

ministration of Phil– IRI is to assess the reading level of each students as well as en-

hancing their comprehension skills in reading.

Good reading comprehension is a fundamental skill which will enable and inspire

the child to succeed in school and later on his daily life. It was claimed that comprehen-

sion serves as a key to gain all the benefits derived from reading.

According to Flood (2003), every man who knows how to read has in his power to

magnify himself, to multiply the ways, in which one exist, to make his life full significant

and interesting. Since it is the aim of all teachers to make the lives of the students “full,

significant and interesting”, the teaching of reading has been of prime concerns to edu-

cators around the globe varied views.

II. Orientation Proper

In the first part, the discussion focused on the post test result of Phil-Iri (Silent

and Oral) in the previous year. The administration of remedial reading was also dis-

cussed.

In the second part, the school reading program coordinator, Ms. Myrna D. Rabi

with the guidance of School head Mr. Rodel C. Male presented a PowerPoint presenta-

tion about the different avenues of the administration of Phil-IRI to the teachers. She

also point out the dates of submission of the results of pre and post test.
In the last part, the presentation focused on how to compute the reading levels of

the students. We also had an open forum and teacher participants raised their queries

regarding the administration of Phil-IRI.

III. Conclusion

To conclude, this orientation of English and Filipino Teachers regarding the Ad-

ministration of Phil– IRI conducted by the school reading program coordinator which

aimed to lift up the methodologies of teachers particularly in the administration of PHIL-

IRI to improve students reading skills comprehension really signified a lot.
