SAFETY SIGNAGE SPECIFICATION FOR HARTBEESPOORT AREA OFFICES,

DAMS & SCHEMES

1.1 Introduction

It is requirement for employers, to post certain safety notices or signs in areas falling in below
mentioned categories by Occupational Health and Safety Act no 85 of 1993 and its sub Regulations.
The Act also requires the notices and signs to conform to an acceptable standard as required by
section 44. The standard referred to is SABS 1186 (SANS 1186:1).Employers do not only have a duty
to post the necessary notices and signs but must also ensure that they are maintained in a good and
legible condition.

1.2 Hartbeespoort Area Offices Safety Signage Survey


Hartbeespoort area offices, dams and schemes have the following areas, premises, zones,
maintenance & operations activities, personnel and equipment which must comply with the above
mentioned Act.

a. All Personal Protective Equipment Zones/Areas were identified and shall be clearly
marked with the necessary signs that indicate all mandatory PPE required. Mandatory signs
may include but are not limited to ear protection, face protection, gloves, hardhats, etc

b. All security areas were identified and shall be clearly market with the necessary signs that
indicate they are prohibited and may only be accessed by authorised persons. Prohibited
signs may include but are not limited to no smoking, no fire arms, no cameras, no swimming,
no boating, no alcohol, no dogs etc.

c. All areas where there is a risk of drowning (canal, dam or river) were identified and shall be
clearly marked with the necessary signs that indicate that they are prohibited and that no
access or swimming is allowed by unauthorised persons.

d. All areas where informative signs are needed were identified and shall be clearly marked
with the necessary signs that to provide information. Informative signage may include but are
not limited to first aid boxes, stairs, emergency assembly point, bathrooms etc.

e. All areas where hazardous warning signs are were identified and shall be clearly marked
with the necessary signs to warn employees, visitors, contractors or any person that enters
the premises against any danger. Hazardous warning signs may include but are not limited to
high voltage, electrical shock, drowning etc.

f. All areas where fire equipment is placed were identified and shall be clearly marked with the
necessary signs that clearly identify this equipment. Fire equipment signs may include but is
not limited to fire extinguishers, hydrants, etc.
g. All areas where lockout and tags must be done during maintenance or repairs were
identified and shall be clearly market with the necessary signs during the lock out process.
Lock out and tag out areas may include but are not limited to stop and start devices on
machines, DB boards, Confined Spaces etc.

h. All areas where hazardous substances are stored were identified and shall be clearly
market with the necessary signs that clearly identify these areas. These signs may include but
is not limited to flammable liquid, corrosion, toxic etc.

i. All vehicles that transport volumes of hazardous substances should be identified and be
clearly market with the necessary signs that clearly identify their loads.

j. All roads on Departmental premises where there are speed limits needs to be clearly market
with the necessary road signs. This includes roads where workers work on or next to a road
with the risk of traffic.

k. All contractors that perform work on Departmental premises shall clearly mark the site with
the necessary signs.

1.3 Hartbeespoort Safety Signage Requirements

The contractor shall supply and deliver the following Symbolic safety signs, Occupational Health &
Safety Act & Regulations books and OSHACT posters complying with SANS 1186 and employer
stated specifications to Department of Water and Sanitation Brits Stores premises.
