2. 1. Field of Use
Photometer FM-1/4/6 is designed for measurement and regulation of traffic area illumination.
Based on L20 measurement according to CIE standard it establishes adequate illumination at any
time of day and in any light conditions. Integrated logic controller and software provide a
complete solution for tunnel lighting regulation with no external controller necessary.
Photometer is provided with analog U/I outputs for additional PLC or SCADA connection.
Multiple-channel 230 V AC programmable contactor or control-line driving outputs are available
for local lighting control. Full function control, measuring range, output channel switching and
time averaging interval are PC programmable using software provided.
Photometer comes with wall/pole fixture; special pole fixture is also available (optional). When
used for tunnel entrance portal-lighting measurement, the photometer is installed at the
stopping distance before the tunnel entrance. It should be pointed directly towards the
entrance. When mounting the photometer on a pole, take special care of proper pole
grounding, including any foldings or joints!
When it is used to measure in-tunnel light conditions, it should be mounted at the height of app.
4.5 metres and pointed to the spot one reaches in 3 seconds at maximum allowed speed. In that
case the driver’s view cannot be simulated accuratley due to mounting height and measuring
result shoud be adopted by correction factor (usually between 1.05 and 1.20). For in-tunnel use,
especially in long tunnels choose full-stainless steel housing option.
Once mounted, an undisturbed view-field of the photometer must be provided. There should be
no light sources or any light reflecting objects in the photometer’s view-field. Any of those can
considerably affect light measuring accuracy.
After final adjustment of tilt and position tighten all the folding joints firmly!
Photometer is connected to the mains power supply 230 V AC and to the tunnel light controlling
system. All connections are done from the back side with cover removed. When removing back
cover or making any connections, DISCONNECT POWER supply first! Cables of 3-9 leads and
minimum 0.75 mm2 must be used for 230 V AC power outputs. For analog U/I outputs and
communication coaxial 2-4 lead data cables are recommended. Maximum connection distance is
up to 400 metres. Available connection possibilities and outputs depends on actual model and
add-on options.
After final connection and successful commissioning place desiccant bag provided in the
photometer’s housing and push it towards the front window. Make sure it is not touching any
electrical part! Cable-inlet glands and back cover must be well tightened after final connection!

2. 4. Onboard indicators
LED indicators on the PCB visible from the back side indicate current light conditions (green) and
contactor output status (red) (see Picture 1). Other LEDs are status indicators and have no
meaning for the user.
The photometer's selectable communication port can be configured for RS-232 or RS-485. Swing
soldered jumpers J1...J3 to the right position according to the protocol (see Picture 2). Connection
distance can be up to 20 metres for RS-232 and 300 metres for RS-485. Communication supports the
complete set of photometer’s functions, setup parameters and output values (see FM Command Set
document).
When serial communication is used for on-line data transfer always choose RS-485. Use RS-232 for
parametric setup or laboratory use only.
Outputs are used for main lighting contactor connection or LST power line control (see SiLST
documentation). They can be directly connected to the coil-side of contactors for light-chain
switching (check contactor’s coil voltage!). Use PC software to distribute switching combinations. The
FM-1 example is shown in Table 2.
A B C D LED
regulation light output
green,

red
0 B < L1 230 V AC / / / ON / / /
Green LEDs indicate estimated switch-level combination (no averaging delay) due to current
light condition. Red LEDs indicate current status of 230 V AC outputs (averaging affected). For
example: At first level LED-A is lit when light conditions are within the limit set for L1. After
preset averaging time the red LED-A and contactor output A will be switched on.
Analog outputs directly follow current light conditions (no averaging is applied). There are voltage (0-
10 V) and current (4- 20 mA) outputs for this purpose. Simultaneous use of both is not recommended
and can affect accuracy. However 230 V AC contactor outputs can be used at the same time with no
affect to accuracy. For example: tunnel lighting can be switched using contactor outputs while light
conditions are monitored via analog output.
B(U) = Brange * U / 10
B(I) = Brange * ( I - 4 ) / 16
2. 5. Wiper-Washer option
When using wiper and washer, they are connected to the last two (E, F) of 230 V AC outputs. Do
note: Those outputs cannot be used for the contactor purpose at the same time, hence the contactor
channels can be down by two with some models!
Use one of the free glands on the back cover of the FM to inlet Washer-pump power cable. When
making any connections, DISCONNECT POWER supply first!

Fasten the metal cage to a wall or a pole and make water-hose and cable installations. Connect
the free end of the water hose to the one coming from the wiper nozzle. Some nozzle or wiper
blade adjustment may be necessary to obtain the best washing result.
Connect the pump power cable in the transformer/connection box mounted on the cage to the
power supply terminal J5 on the board inside and cover the terminal with the silicone sheath
provided. Use a suitable cable sectioned at minimum 1.5 mm2. Any electrical connection must
be performed with the power supply disconnected and the FM circuit-breaker open!
Depending on the version, the pump can be provided with different power supply voltages.
Check your FM for the correct value. Find the position of the fuses on the board.
The pump is supplied with the fuse in position FUS1 (for a 230 V AC power supply). Move the
fuse into the correct holder according to the FM voltage if different (see Picture 5).
After installation tighten the connection box cover and all the cable glands firmly.
Take the plug out of the tank along with the pump and fill the tank with water. If the
temperature falls below 3 °C add an adequate amount of antifreeze additive. Insert the pump
back in the tank and tighten the cap. The system is now ready to be powered.
2. 6. Calibration
Factory calibration:
Recalibrations:
3. 1. Setting up PC Communication
Prior to communication, the photometer must be connected to the computer and communication
properties must be set. Connect PC’s COM or remote ETH/serial port to the photometer’s
communication port. For RS-232/485 settings on the photometer see 2. 4. 1 Serial Communication
Port in this manual.
Next step to successful communication is selecting the photometer’s correct ID number which is
used to identify the photometer when there is more than one device connected to the bus (RS-
485). It is factory preset and it is recommended to use the last two digits of the device’s serial
number (see back side sticker) as the ID. Select the ID number in upper field prior to
communication. User can change the photometer’s ID number. Use this procedure when there
is another device with the same ID on the bus only. Write new ID into the field and click New ID
button. The numerical data within 0…255 can be selected. Make sure to write down the new ID!
If ID is forgotten, power off and on the photometer. Set the ID and New ID to 0 and click New ID
button. This resets the ID to default last two digits of the serial number. It can only be done as
the first command after power on!
System Settings
Photometer’s system and calibration information can be seen on System Settings tab. System
Settings button is for calibration and test purpose only and has no meaning for the user. Click
Read button to check system information.
When Manual Manipulation option is selected user can manipulate contactor outputs by clicking
Level..., Event... or contactor A...F on/off buttons. Currently switched on contactors will be
marked red after first read/write operation. No Read / Write clicking is required.
When Light Level option is selected the photometer responds to user defined contactor-output
combinations. Fields Level 1...16 represent the upper limit for each switching combination. They
can be set for each level independently in cd/m2. Only numerical data entries are accepted.
When using less than 16 light level combinations, fill the rest of Light Level fields with zeroes,
and first zero-level-field with the combination used when the highest level specified is exceeded.
(see: Picture 7; Table 2) . Click Write button to apply any changes.
There are two more combination fields Event 1, 2. Fill those with combinations used on special
events (e.g. accident or fire). The combination is engaged when photometer receives event
status information via communication or frequency port (when configured as Event input).
Wiper/Washer function is used with optional unit. When set, C and D contactor outputs are
dedicated to the washer pump and wiper motor. Select the washing interval in days for
photometer’s front screen cleaning or apply immediate action by clicking Clean Now button.
Wiper-Washer option reduces number of available 230 V AC outputs for lighting control by two. Click
Write button to apply any changes.
Range
Use Range setting to define measuring sub-range of the photometer. Always use the lowest
range possible, making sure that light level never exceeds it. In Auto Range mode photometer
switches ranges according to light conditions and offers best accuracy. Use this option when
light level data acquisition is done from serial communication or contactor outputs. When using
analog U/I outputs, choose fixed range R1-R3. Click Write button to apply any changes.
By clicking Read button data is read from the photometer. Data is only read from the device with
the matching ID number. After reading, data is refreshed in all fields.
Manual setting reads light level and any other device’s parameter by clicking Read button. Use
Auto setting to read light level and contactor status information only. Data is automatically read
according to Logging interval (see 3. 4. Data Logging). Light level data is not affected by
averaging delay.
Light level monitoring and data logging parameters are set on Data Logging tab.
Light Level Read field in the Configuration tab must be set to Auto to activate data logging.
Table, graph and data files are updated each time Light Level data is read from photometer.
Logging interval is time in minutes between two readings. The numerical data between 1 and 60
minutes can be selected. If the number 0 is selected, logging interval is 1 second.
To save logged data click Export button and save *.txt file to your computer. The dialog window
appears for you to select the name and file location.
Data logging can be paused by clicking on the table. To continue set the Auto option in Light
Level Read field of Configuration tab again. Logging is also paused when the table is cleared,
zoomed in or when data is being exported.
4 Maintenance
It is recommended to:
