WORK AIDS
Definition

Working aid is an important and essential part of any Garments Industry.


Working Aid is one of the most effective sewing tools. In the domestic
production of garments, 70% of the time is wasted for the handling of fabric.
Other 30% used for sewing. To reduce this wastage in industrial production
of garments work aids required.

Objectives
• To increase the production.
• To improve the quality of garments.
• To reduce the work- load on operator.
• To reduce the time for handling.
• To control the garments quality.
WORK AIDS AND EQUIPMENT'S FOR GARMENT
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
To facilitate worker in doing their jobs most efficiently number of readymade and
customized work aids and equipment are being used in the garment industry.
Especially work aids are designed for material handling, folding etc. In the following
some of the basic work aids are listed those are used in factory in Raw material
warehouse, cutting department, sewing floor and finishing department.

Work aids of sewing machines means additional working parts which are attached with
the general sewing machine to increase production to reduce faults and to increase
quality are called work aids.
Work aids can be fitted with machine easily.
To reduce handling time and to increase the production, some work aids are used with the
sewing machines.

GUIDE
 Guides are used for correct sewing in predetermined position or in a determined and
proper distance form edge of fabric.
 It is also used for straight and curved sewing to increase the quality and productivity.
Edge guides are used in over edge machine.
HEM GUIDE

JIG
 A jig’s primary purpose is to provide repeatability, accuracy, and
interchangeability in the manufacturing of products.
 A device that does both functions (holding the work and guiding a tool) is
called a jig.

SPECIALIZED PRESSURE FOOT


 The Blind hem Foot is perfect for sewing invisible hems. Use it to sew the
elastic blind hem for an optional finish and you won‘t need additional
finishing on the hem edge. Sewing by hand is no longer necessary.

UNIVERSAL OR ZIGZAG PRESSURE FOOT
 This all-purpose presser foot is the default for most straight and zigzag
stitching, and even many decorative stitches.

ZIPPER PRESSURE FOOT


 Zipper foot allow you to stitch close to the zipper, helping to create a
neat appearance and allowing proper zipper functioning.

OVER LOCK PRESSURE FOOT
 The over lock foot will neaten seam edges on knits and woven on your
sewing machine.

PIN TUCK
 Commonly seen on heirloom sewing projects, the pin tuck foot adds a sweet
touch to baby garments and fine lingerie. Pin tuck foot come in a variety of
sizes — 3, 5, 7 and even 9 grooves — to create different size tucks on your
fabric using a double needle

 Totally worth the money, and probably second most-used specialty foot.

JEANS PRESSURE FOOT


 If you like sewing jeans, this handy foot will help you make neat, straight
seams on denim and other heavy fabrics

STRAIGHT STITCH FOOT
 For shirts, and use the straight stitch foot to better control the fabric
when using short stitches on fine cotton fabric. Using this foot and a
straight stitch plate, it is impossible to “punch” fabric down under the
throat plate of your sewing machine.

 it is definitely not just for quilters. Great for doll clothes and many small
shirt-making seams, too.
FOLDERS IN APPAREL INDUSTRY
Folder:
It is one kind of work aid helps in sewing for smooth production and
increase the productivity as well.
It is spare parts of sewing machines used at different stages for different
purposes.
Different types folders are available for stitching the garments. It folds one
or more materials into the desired configuration for sewing.
 Light folder (0.15mm to 0.25mm thickness) – silk, synthetic materials, poplin, bed
sheet
 Medium folder (0.27mm to 0.40mm thickness)–single jersey knit depends on the type
of fabric.
 Heavy folder (0.45mm to 1.5mm thickness)–twill, corduroy, denim
FEATURES OF A FOLDER IN THE APPAREL INDUSTRY

There are some basic features of a folder, these are-


 It helps to improve the productivity.
 Improve or maintain quality standards.
 Reduce training time of operator.
 Reduce fatigue of the operator.

CRITERIA OF FOLDER

 It is one of the sewing machine spare parts which folds one or more materials into the
desired configuration.
 Folders are constructed for specific applications, which may provide for the insertion
of tapes, trim fabrics, elastic and so on at the same time as the material is folded.
 It must need the skilled operator to sew the fabric by folding. Also the quality and
productivity are other factors related to it. To increase the production and to ensure
the quality of products, folder is used.
 It may be placed in the middle or in front of pressure foot.
 There are different types of folders are available but they are divided into three main
groups as given below-
a) To fold the parts of garments
b) To attach the parts
c) To attached other materials with garments finally
FOLDER
HEMMING FOLDER

 It is excellent for continuous hemming on automatic sewing


operations.
 It’s suitable for double needle lockstitch machine.
 Used to make narrow hems and other straight hemming
operations.
SLEEVE ATTACHING FOLDER

 It is used for sleeve attaching operation by using a single


needle lock stitch machine.
PIPING FOLDER

 It is used for preparing piping seam by using a single needle lock


stitch machine.
Belt Loop Folder

 It is used for preparing belt loop by using a single needle lock


stitch machine.
Waist Band Folder

 It is used for attaching waistband by using double needle


lockstitch machine.
 It binds seam on the waistband.
