LEARNING CODE:
S8LT-IVh-20
CONTENT STANDARDS:
The species as being further classified into a hierarchical taxonomic system.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learners should be able to report (e.g., through a travelogue) on the
activities that communities engage in to protect and conserve endangered and
economically important species.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Classify organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system.

A COMPETENCY-BASED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 8

I- OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, students are able to:

1.) Define taxonomy.

2.) Classify organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system.
3.) Value the importance of the topic in real life setting.

II- SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Naming and Classifying Organisms
Code: S8LT-IVh-20

The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group

will be given different tasks that are placed inside
the envelope.

GROUP 1
“Where Do I Belong?”
TASK: Classify these three sets of organisms based on their
shared characteristics. Label each group and prepare to explain
the basis of your classification.

GROUP 2
“Who Am I?”
TASK: Solve the jigsaw puzzle and find out the name of the
scientist in the puzzle by arranging the jumbled letters. Prepare
to introduce this scientist to your classmates later.

GROUP 3
“Who Am I Related To?”
TASK: Help Grizzly bear find his close relatives by filling the
organisms under the eight levels of classification. Organisms in
the same level or taxa share the same characteristics. Classify
the organisms that truly belong to each taxa.
NOTE: Each white envelope contains pictures of organisms
belong to each taxa except for one. Eliminate carefully.

GROUP 4
“Name Me!”
TASK: Give the scientific name of the organisms by referring to
the table of classification. Also, provide at least two common
names of each organism.
NOTE: Follow the correct format of writing a scientific name.
Compare the two types of names (scientific name and common
name) and take note of your comparison.

2.) ANALYSIS
- How did you find the activity?
- How did you feel about the activity?
- What was the activity all about?
- What are the things that you learn out from the
activity?
- What particular idea struck you the most and why?

3.) ABSTRACTION

Taxonomy is the science or system of describing the way

in which living things are related by putting them in groups.
Hierarchical Taxonomic System is the system that Carolus
Linnaeus published. It is used until today to classify organisms
into eight different levels or taxa. The eight levels or taxa are
Domain, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species.
Domain as the general classification and the species is the
most specific. To easily memorize these eight levels or taxa, we
can use the mnemonics” Dear King Philip Came Over For
Good Soup.

4.) APPLICATION
Classify the following organisms according to their
taxonomical rank.
human (Homo sapiens)
housefly (Musca domestica)
dog( Canis lupus familiaris)
corn ( Zea mays)
onion (Allium cepa)

5.) ADJUSTMENT
Why do we need to organize things at home?
What do you think will happen if we fail to organize these
things? Write a reaction paper about it.

IV- ASSIGNMENT
Check your Understanding

1.) Why can common names cause confusion?

2.) What does a scientific name tell us?
