CHAPTER 6

CONCLUSIONS AND SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK

6.1 CONCLUSION

This chapter offers concluding remarks on the research carried out

and explained in chapters 3 to 5. The core of the work is performance study
on FACTS controllers embedded in a 13 Bus power system fed by WECS.
When subjected to disturbances the response parameters are voltage and
current THD‟s, stability and voltage profile.

The different controllers such as VSC based and Hexagram based

controller to over the FACTS devices, conventional PWM control technique
was substituted with intelligent control algorithms like FLC and ANFIS. The
work involves,

(i) Identification of weak buses by CPF method,

(ii) Connecting FACTS controllers to the weak buses and

(iii) Simulation in MATLAB of the 13 Bus WECS system using

various FACTS controllers without and with intelligent
algorithms.

Critical comparison of simulation results leads us to the following

conclusions.
168

(i) The table clearly shows that Hexagram based UPQC and
IPQC controllers maintain the voltage profile against
disturbance and outage.

(ii) The system recovers rapidly from the impact of disturbances

after the disturbance period. However, the voltage THD gets
increased after the disturbance period.

(iii) The simulation results of 13 Bus system using ANFIS as

control algorithm show considerable improvements in the
form of reduced current and voltage THDs, indicating
efficiency of the ANFIS algorithm.

(iv) In the two controllers, VSC and Hexagram controller, the

inherent power is better evident in improving voltage
injection during sag period. Also Hexagram based IPQC
performs well compared to Hexagram based UPQC.

(v) The best controller and control algorithm combine is

Hexagram based IPQC with ANFIS algorithm.

(vi) The system stability of the 13 Bus system is maintained

during and after the disturbance period. Moreover voltage and
current THDs are well within the limits stipulated by IEEE
standards.

6.2 SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK

The proposed FACTS controller performs satisfactorily for 13 Bus

system. Therefore this can be extended to IEEE standard Bus system.
Hexagram based IPQC can be supported by more intelligent control logics.
This is expected to result in further improvements in power quality. A
169

hardware implementation of the control logics will validate the proposed

algorithm.

Identification of weak buses is an important step in the placement

of FACTS controllers. A straight forward and reliable method can be
developed to replace CPF and different methods.
