conducting WEBINAR on PLUMBING FOR
HIGH RISE BUILDING AND TIPS on
I SAVE WATER
High Rise Building

National Building Code :

Building Greater than 15 meter
height

However, in this paper we shall

address building greater than 25
meter in height; say about 8
stories or more.

PLUMBING

 The pipes, fixtures and other apparatus inside a

building for bringing the water supply and removing
the liquid, water born wastes.

The installation of the foregoing pipes, fixtures and

other apparatus.

Plumbing is a discipline founded in hydraulics and

legal issues governed by codes and standards.

6/14/2020 3
This discipline includes, the design of hot and cold
water, rain/storm, drainage ,venting Systems,
rainwater harvesting, water reclamation, grey water,
green plumbing and so on.

An efficient plumbing system starts with a design that

saves water and energy resources. A good design
incorporates short runs between plumbing fixtures
and uses state-of-the art materials.

A plumbing design must include two systems: the

system that supplies water and the system that gets
rid of waste.

4
However, the drawback of vertical piping is the
multiple penetrations through structural slabs. Each of
these penetrations must be sealed or protected to fulfil
the requirements of building codes, in term of
protecting the building pressurization and also to
prevent vertical migration of fire and smoke.

The location of these multiple penetrations is critical

to the integrity of the structure and the function of the
fixtures even more than the aesthetics of the built
environment. Tall buildings require more robust
structures, further limiting the allowable space for
penetrations.

Functional / Desirable Requirement
Efficient Water Supply & Drainage System

 Availability of adequate water supply at desirable

pressure of about 1.75 Kg/Sq.cm (25 PSI)

 Availability of water of desirable potable quality for

domestic use

 Efficient hot water supply & distribution installation

 High hygiene standard for Soil & Waste Disposal

 Adequately designed vent piping system

6/14/2020 6
Unacceptable Situation

 Low water pressure and surges in water

supply

 Poor quality of water

 Inadequate temperature of Hot water

 Poor soil & waste piping installation resulting

in backflow, chock-age & seepage

 Foul smell in the complex due to poor vent

design.

Water Supply System
Design of Piping & Distribution network
depends upon:

Demand Flow

Velocity

Pressure

6/14/2020 8
Consideration for High
Rise Building
 Zoning of Water Supply & Distribution System

Building may be divided into two, three or more zones

Water supply pumping system or gravity feed system should be

independently provided for each zone

In a pumping system installation, pump duty is dependent upon

respective zone requirement

– Q - Flow : Calculation based on fixtures installed and its

probable simultaneous use

– H - Head : Static height of zone; friction loss (depending upon

pipe length) & residual pressure (fixture dependent) 9
