Compare and contrast the models/descriptions of the
universe by Eudoxus, Aristotle, Aristarchus, Ptolemy,
Learning Competency: Code:S11/12PS-IVa-40
and Copernicus

Key Concepts/ 1. Eudoxos used series of 27 concentric spheres on which the sun, the moon, and
Understanding to be the planets moved in a perfect circular motion.
Developed: 2. Aristotle employed the 27 spheres of Eudoxos as buffering spheres between
celestial sphere and outermost sphere.
3. Aristarchus claimed that the sun, not the earth, was the fixed center of the
universe, and that the earth, along with the rest of the planets, revolved around
the sun
4. Ptolemy introduced the idea of an epicycle to explain planetary motion which
each planet has its own epicycle and deferent.
5. Copernicus heliocentrism positioned the Sun near the center of the Universe,
motionless, with Earth and the other planets rotating around it in circular paths
modified by epicycles and at uniform speeds.

Knowledg Identify the models/ description of the universe.

e
Skills Compare and contrast the models/descriptions of the universe by
1. OBJECTIVES Eudoxus, Aristotle, Aristarchus, Ptolemy, and Copernicus
Attitudes Demonstrate cooperation in making a concept map summarizing the
models/descriptions of the universe
Values Practice respect for other’s idea
2. CONTENT Models of the Universe
3. LEARNING Exploring Life through Science by Santiago, et. al. p 136-140

4. PROCEDURES
4.1 Introductory Activity
Routinely activities: prayer and checking of attendance.
Present short video clip on models of the universe
Simulation on Solar System Model/ Celestial Globe (if no downloaded video clips)
Ask students what have they feel after the video presentation/simulation.
Recall prior knowledge on the proponent of the Solar System Model.
4.2 Activity
Group the students into five to create a model of the universe. Draw a lot for their
assigned model of the universe.
4.3 Analysis
Ask what have they noticed on each model.
1. What have you observed on the different models of the universe?
2. What are the similarities and differences of each model?
4.4 Abstraction Deliberate the ff. ideas:
Eudoxos used series of 27 concentric spheres on which the sun, the moon, and
the planets moved in a perfect circular motion where one sphere for fixed stars,
three spheres for the sun, three spheres for the moon, and four spheres for the
five planets- Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter.
Aristotle employed the 27 spheres of Eudoxus as buffering spheres between
celestial sphere and outermost sphere.
Aristarchus claimed that the sun, not the earth, was the fixed center of the
universe, and that the earth, along with the rest of the planets, revolved around
the sun
Ptolemy introduced the idea of an epicycle to explain planetary motion which
each planet has its own epicycle and deferent.
Copernicus heliocentrism positioned the Sun near the center of the Universe,
motionless, with Earth and the other planets rotating around it in circular paths
modified by epicycles and at uniform speeds.
4.5 Application
Let the students demonstrate the cooperation with their respective groups in constructing
a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast models of the universe.

4.6 Assessment
Role playing by groups on the model of the universe assigned and to be describe by the
previous presentor.
4.7 Assignment
Research by pair at least two astronomical phenomena known to astronomers before the
advent of telescope.
4.8 Concluding Activity
Appreciate the Gods creation.
5. REMARKS Indicate below special cases including but not limited to continuation of lesson plan to
the following day in case of re-teaching or lack of time, transfer of lesson to the
following day, in cases of classes suspension, etc.

6. REFLECTIONS Reflect on your teaching and assess yourself as a teacher. Think about your student’s
progress this week. What works? What else needs to be done to help the students learn?
Identify what help your instructional supervisors can provide for you so when you meet
them, you can ask them relevant questions. Indicate below whichever is/are appropriate.
