LEIOMYOMA

A benign neoplasm of smooth muscle within oral cavity tissue, usually blood vessels which
appears as firm, movable, submucosal nodule
Clinical feature:

 common site within oral cavity is tongue, may also appear on palate and lips
 Arises mainly during adult year
 No sex predilection exists
 Appears as smooth submucosal nodule. The overlying epithelium lacks ulceration may
have yellowish appearance.
 On palpation tumor is firm and well delineated
 In loose tissuse of tongue and buccal mucosa they are freely movable
Histopathological feature:

 Leiomyoma is composed of spindle shaped cells with elongated nuclei


 The elongated nuclei show blunt ends resulting in cigar shaped appearance
 Trichome stain is used to differentiate fibromas from leiomyoma. It differentiates
cytoplasmic elements (pink) from collagenous structures of fibroblasts (blue or green )
 The show results positive for muscle specific action.
 Leiomyoma arise from perivascular cells they show concentric laminations around
endothelial lined lumens.
