UNIT 4.

1 DIFFERENT WAYS TO RUN A COUNTRY


A – DEMOCRACY
 Origin started in Ancient Greece
 Mainly in Europe and USA
 Beliefs
 Ordinary people have a say in how their country is governed.
 Vote in regular elections in which there are several political parties to choose from.
 The people are represented by the organizations they elect (choose), e.g. parliament or council.

 Rights (freedom of) :


 speech
 information
 belief
 law
 association( rights to join or form a political party, join a trade union or any organization)

 Examples of democracies in the 1920s and 1930s


 Britain, France & USA

B – DICTATORSHIP
 Origin started for thousand years
 Tried to totally control others
 The controllers are usually backed up by large numbers of supporters and lots of weapon
 Beliefs:
 Ordinary people have no say in how their country is run
 No regular elections because the country is run by one political party or one man – the dictator

 Rights (no freedom of)


 speech
 information
 religion
 no legal freedom ( police can arrest whom they want, when they want and keep them in prison
without trial
 people can only join groups or associations allowed by the dictatorship

 Examples of dictatorships from the 1920s and 1930s


 Italy, Spain, USSR (RUSSIA), and Nazi Germany
