Review Ask the class to define the following:


What is conflict?
What is an internal and external conflict?
What are the sub types of external conflict?
Motivation Ask the students if they had watched an episode of “ Ipaglaban Mo”, then let them explain
what the show is all about?
Ask them also about the dilemma faced by the characters in the said show.
C. Activity Post photo on the board. Let the students tell their thoughts about each photo. They should be
able to come up with the idea that these photos represent another type of external conflict
other than the MAN VS SOCIETY, MAN VS TECHNOLOGY, and MAN VS SUPERNATURAL.
D. Analysis Process Questions:
1. What is a conflict?
2. What are the two major types of conflict?
3. What are the difference between internal and external conflict?
4. What is the sub type of external conflict?
E. Abstraction Conflict - comes from the Latin word “ configire’, which means stuck together.
The conflict is a struggle between two people or things in a short story. It is what makes the
story exciting.

Internal conflict, which takes place in a person’s mind—for example, a struggle to make a
decision or overcome a feeling. Internal conflicts are character vs. self.

External conflict, which generally takes place between a person and someone or something
else, such as nature, another person or persons, or an event or situation. External conflicts may
be character vs. character, character vs. nature, or character vs. society.

Man VS Society
In many stories, the protagonist battles an unjust element of government or culture

Man VS Technology
The central character struggles with or against the forces of technology.

Man VS Supernatural
The central character is challenged by forces that are not of this world.

F. Application 1. “If she had only proceeded more slowly.


If she had only taken the Southerly route, avoiding the icebergs. If only the watch had had a
pair of binoculars.” - (news story about the Titanic)
2. Charles decided to break all the rules the day he decided to steal that car. He was
immediately arrested and sent to jail to await his trial. He should have known better than to
mess with the “rules.”
3. Mr. Smith challenged the fairness of the law.
4. Jack Juniper is the best fighter pilot in the Air Force. He can take down an enemy jet while
doing a barrel roll. One day while Jack is escorting some friendly pilots to a military base,
something that Jack has never seen before attacks the convoy... aliens! Can Jack outmaneuver
the highly skilled alien pilots or is the mission doomed to failure?
5. “Let’s fight for freedom!” cried Bouncer. “We’ll be soldiers! Rough-riding Rowdies! I’ll be
the general and commander-in-chief!”
