International Day for Biological Diversity May 22, 2018

Venue: The Raintree, Anna Salai, Chennai


The Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity
(IDB) by holding an Event at the Raintree Hotel, Anna Salai, Chennai on May 22, 2018
(0930 hrs to 1400 hrs). The theme for IDB for the year 2018 is "Celebrating 25 years of
Action for Biodiversity”. The theme was chosen to mark the 25 th anniversary of the entry into
force of the Convention on Biological Diversity and to highlight progress made in the
achievement of its objectives at the national and global levels.
The Hon’ble Minister of Forest & Chairman, TNBB – Thiru. Dindigul. C. Srineevasan was
the Chief Guest for the event. In his inaugural speech he addressed about the importance of
the event, importance of Biodiversity conservation and also highlighted the activities of the
Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board.
The other dignitaries included Thiru Md. Nasimuddin, IAS, Principal Secretary, Environment
& Forests, Thiru R.K Upadhayay IFS, PCCF (HoFF), Thiru T.P Raghunath IFS, PCCF &
CWLW.
Over 40 officials from various Government departments such as Agriculture, Animal
Husbandry, Horticulture, Forest and Fisheries from Chennai were present during the
workshop. The workshop also had representatives from the research & academic institutions
and NGOs.
The Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board website was launched and the logo of the Board was
released along with two book releases by the Hon’ble Minister of Forest during the inaugural
session. The books released were 1. Butterflies of Tamil Nadu – Authors Mr.N. Satheesh &
P.N Mohanprasath 2. Wild Tamil Nadu – A Veritable Cornucopia of Nature – by Tamil Nadu
Biodiversity Board
The technical sessions during the celebrations were delivered by distinguished experts in the
field of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Plant Genetics & Medicinal Plants.
As a part of the 2018 IDB celebrations, 32 District Nodal Officers (DFOs) conducted various
competitions and activities like drawing, painting, oratory, biodiversity talks & walks in their
respective district headquarters on various biodiversity conservation themes.
