HARAMAIN HIGH SPEED RAIL ‐ GRP CONCOURSE ROOF SUBMITTAL
False ceiling (CLG520/CLG522)
Material Proposal: Chicago Metallic Corporation (CMC)
1 Material requirement
The roof of the stations (Jeddah, Medina, Makkah, and King Abdullah Economic City) of the
Haramain High Speed Rail Project will be made with GRP panel. In the roof system there is a
several incorporated items such as ceramic tiles in the top surface (external) and false
ceiling in the bottom surface (Internal).
There are two types of false ceiling for the concourse roof of Jeddah station, type CLG 520
and type CLG 522. The particular requirements of each one are defined after the
performances requirements defined below.
Structural
1‐ General
The false ceiling shall resist all static and dynamic loads to which they are subjected
accommodating all movements in adjoining construction without visible deflection or
distortion. The ceiling system shall transmit such loads safely to the points of support in
accordance with BS EN 13964.
2‐ Movements
a) The ceiling system shall accommodate all movements imposed by the building
structure in whatever combination they may occur without distortion, damage or
reduction in performance.
b) The fixings and support structure shall accommodate all necessary tolerance
required to resist imposed movements whilst maintaining adequate stability and
structural integrity.
c) The ceiling system shall accommodate changes in dimension and shape of
components resulting in varying temperature in the building without any reduction
in performance.
d) The ceiling system shall withstand changes in the moisture content, the prevailing
moisture content in the air and within components, without any reduction in
performance and appearance.

3‐ Loads
a) The works shall maintain adequate performance in accordance with BS EN 13964
with respect to strength, stiffness and stability related to thickness in relation to size
of panel, frequency of supports, self‐weight, presence of and interaction with
structural columns, walls, slabs, etc.
b) Resist vertical and lateral loads imposed by mechanical and electrical installations
and other fittings and fixtures.
c) The ceiling system shall withstand vibrations to which they are subjected by
transmitting them to points of support or absorbing by use of dampening materials.
No drumming noises shall be audible.
d) No pipework, cabling or ductwork shall be supported by any part of the ceiling
system.
e) Ensure compatibility with methods of fabrication and installation including
resistance of temporary loads and future maintenance operations.
4‐ Deflections
a) Deflection of the works due to self‐weight shall be accommodated locally and shall
not exceed L/ 400 for spans up to 1200mm and L/ 500 for spans up to 1800mm.
b) Dead loads derived from permanent fixtures or services attached to or through the
suspended ceiling shall be accommodated locally without causing deflection or
movement.
5‐ Rigidity
a) The design and construction of the works shall be such that they remain rigid, free
from play and permanent deformation caused by the normal use to which they are
subjected. Panels shall be retained mechanically under all conditions.
b) Account shall be taken of the structural requirements of the various fixtures and
fittings to be fitted into the works. Suitable bracketry and supports for use with the
structure to which they are fixed shall be incorporated.
c) Details of proposed fixings shall be submitted to the Engineer for review.
d) Maximum permitted mid span deflection, under imposed loading, shall not exceed
span/ 400 where span is a maximum of 1500mm. The maximum deflection shall be
stated on the Working Drawings.

Environmental
1. Moisture Movement
a) Where the works are to be installed during inclement or cold weather, take
precautions to ensure that components are not detrimentally affected.
b) Strictly observe the ambient and surface temperature recommendations of the
manufacturer.
c) Protect from frost, excessive humidity or premature drying out.
d) Ensure that the moisture content of all materials is appropriate to the conditions of
use and that the components withstand the prevailing levels of relative humidity
both in construction and use.
Acoustic
1‐ Sound Absorption
a) Each panel, where specified, shall be lined with a sound absorbent blanket encased
in a flameproof membrane and supported on wire grid spacers.
b) Sound absorption requirements: The random incidence sound absorption coefficient
of the ceiling system (measured in accordance with BS EN ISO 354) provided by the
installed panels, as indicated on the Design Drawings, shall not be less than those
stipulated in the Acoustic Report.
c) The works shall not have "buzzing", "ringing" or other extraneous noise arising from
fittings in the works construction caused by internal vibration or other movements.
Extraneous noise arising from local response of the ceiling, loose fit resonant
elements and scope for friction and noise shall be avoided by means of careful
quality control in assembly and installation.
d) The works shall form a complete acoustically sealed joint at junctions with
interfacing elements where indicated on the design drawings.
e) Ensure that the works are sealed at all edge conditions to minimise transmittance of
sound to adjoining areas.
2‐ Sound Insulation
Airborne sound insulation of complete ceiling assembly shall be to BS EN ISO 140: Part 4 and
for:
a) Room to room sound attenuation: To BS EN ISO 10848: Part 2.
b) Sound absorption: To BS EN ISO 354.
HARAMAIN HIGH SPEED RAIL ‐ GRP CONCOURSE ROOF SUBMITTAL
c) Sound reduction: To BS EN ISO 140: Part 3.
Fire

a) The works shall be 'materials of limited combustibility' as defined in the NPFA codes
and the Fire Strategy Report and shall achieve the required rating when tested in
accordance with codes.
b) The ceiling shall achieve a Class A rating in accordance with ASTM E84.
2‐ Fire Resistance
The works shall be fire resistant to the relevant parts of the Fire Strategy Report.
3‐ Cavity Barriers
a) All concealed spaces above the works shall have firebreaks in accordance with the
Building Regulations to subdivide the ceiling void into areas not exceeding 20 metres
in any one direction. Firebreaks shall be located on the line of the required
compartments as indicated on the plan area.
b) Barriers shall be fixed securely at perimeters and joints and as necessary to ensure
permanent stability and continuity with no gaps, thus providing a complete barrier
to smoke and flame.
c) Fixing to the works shall not impair free expansion of grid system or otherwise affect
fire‐resisting performance.
Durability
1‐ Components
a) The works shall not deteriorate under normal usage provided regular cleaning and
maintenance is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's
recommendations.
b) All visible elements of the works (e.g. panels, trims, tiles) shall be replaceable.
2‐ Demountability
a) Visible elements of the works shall be interchangeable and removable for
maintenance purposes
b) All ceilings' panels and support systems shall be demountable within the supporting
framework for access to the services void above.
