SWORN CONFESSION
Name: Winston Smith Date of birth: 17/08/1943 Age: 39 Date: 3/5/1984
Address: Victory Mansions Region: Oceania Country: London Zip:

My name is Winston Smith. Being of sound mind and body, I freely confess to conspiring with
the Brotherhood against the Party, being unfaithful to my wife, and committing multiple thought
crimes. I disagreed with the Party, which might seem ironic given that I work in the Ministry of
Truth, but that is the reason why I did what I did. Plus, I think that this society can do better than
this totalitarian government that does not seek the people’s wellbeing, it seeks to be in total
control of our thoughts and our lives. We should be allowed to think whatever we want, and we
should be allowed to marry and divorce whoever we want, but since we are not allowed to, I
guess I committed a crime. I won’t tell you who else is in the Brotherhood partly because I only
know about 5 members. Moreover, I am kind of new so I don’t know much about the
Brotherhood, but I will tell you what I know if you give immunity to Julia.
The Brotherhood practically wants to take down the Party and does not care about any
ramifications. After we were “recruited”, we interrogated for them to know to what extent we
would go to see the Party be taken down, let’s just say, very far. After that we were given a book
that contained the answers to how and why they do what they do. I did not get to the why, and
the how I think is by using the Party’s slogans and ideals against you.

whole truth and nothing but the truth and may be presented to a magistrate or a judge in
lieu of your sworn testimony at a preliminary examination. Any false statement you make
that you do not believe to be true may subject you to criminal punishment as a class “A”
misdemeanor.
I love Winston although I know he is married. We wanted to live our lives without the
restrictions of the Party. He knew of a secret society called the Brotherhood, and I remember
suddenly being “dragged” into a secret meeting to enter the Brotherhood. But I did it willingly
because I love Winston, so if I did it willingly I do not understand why I am only a witness, I
mean shouldn’t I be convicted of multiple crimes?
Look, I have lived my life by the book. I joined the Junior Anti-sex League, I give out
pamphlets, and I help out in any way I can. I can help you find out more about the Brotherhood,
just...don’t vanish me or Winston, please.
