2009

1. 100.What would you do if you had 100 days to live? Written and directed by Chris
Martinez.
The film “100” stars MyleneDizon as a terminally ill cancer patient named Joyce
who has barely 3 months to left to live. Shaken by the thought that there may not be life
after death, Joyce comes up with a list of things to do before she dies.
Her task range from the comical (running naked at the beach) to the macabre(picking
out her funeral attire and coffin). Along with her best friend Ruby, ex-boy friend Emil and
her reluctant mother, Joyce finds out what it means to be alive.

2. Imburnal (Sewer)
Set in the coastal slums of Davao City, the film sees the lives of two young boys,
Allen Lumanog and Joel San Juan, who seem to be hunted by the area’s death squads.
The boys are looked after by Gigi (JelietaMariveles-Ruca). The film was written and
directed by Sherad Anthony Sanchez.

3. “Boses” (Voices)
Musician Ariel (Coke Bolipata) offers a slum-dwelling 7-year olds Onyok (Julian
Duque) violen lessons and soon doscover’s the child’s immense musical talent. He also
discovers that Onyok is ritually abused by a cruel father, named Ricky Davao and has
satyed mute to cope. As Onyok struggles to find his voice through music, Ariel also
learns to confront his own limitations. The film is written by Froi Medina and Rody Vera
and produced and directed by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil.

4. “Melancholia”
Lav Diaz became a one-man team for this film, he wrote, directed and edited the
movie and even served as its cinematographer.
Melancholia has 3 parts and an epilogue, following the lives of Julian (Perry
Dizon), Alberta (Angeli Agbayani) and (Malaya Cruz) who try to cope with the loss of
loved ones. The film has a runtime of 7 hours. (it won the 2008 Venice Film Festival
Orizzonti Prize for best Feature Film)

5. Haw-Ang (Before Harvest)


Set in rural community couched within the Cordillera rice terraces, the films tells
the story of sister Adel, a light-hearted young nun who literallygoes out of her way to
teach indigenous children. Though she breaks some of the tribe’s rules while doing so,
she eventually develops close friendships with the children and convinces the tribe’s
leader to build a schoolhouse.

6. “Jay”
The film stars a-list celebrities Baron Geisler and Coco Martin who are worlds
apart yet share the same name and sexual orientation. One is living, the other dead. One
is making a documentary about the other’s brutal murder. Both are gay, but only one of
them has the chance to unravel the other’s hidden life and secret love. A word of
caution: do not believe everything you see. The film directed by Francis Xavier Pasion.

7. “Yanggaw”
Featuring an all-star cast, the film is both horror and melodrama. “Yanggaw”
focuses on the life of a family who struggle to keep their daughter, believed to have
turned into a monster, safe from hostile and suspicious villagers. The characters all in
Ilongo throughout the film. Written and directed by Richard Somes. “Yanggaw” casts
Ronnie Lazaro, former playboy model Tetchi Agbayani, Joel Torre and AleeraMontalla.

8. “Sisa”
All Filipinos are familiar with the madwoman “Sisa” from Jose Rizal’s epic novel
“Noli Me Tangere.” but who is she, really? “Sisa” is directed by CJ Andaluz, is an
exploration into the life Narcisa or Sisa .Dalangin before she went crazy over the tragic
murder of her young son Basilio and Crispin.
Set in the Spanish occupation, Sisa (Jodi Sta. Maria) is quiet girl who lives with
her grandmother and catches the eye of two suitors, Pedro Magbuhos (Carlos Maceda)
and Juanito (Christian Vasquez). When Sisa chooses Juanito, Pedro take his revenge by
his Sisa’s grandmother imprisoned, and sets off chain of events that will lead to Sisa’s
demise.

9. “HunghongsaYuta.”
Written and directed by ArnelMardoquioThe film is heartwarming tale of teacher
who volunteers to educate deaf-mute Christian and Muslim children in a poor mountain
community in Mindanano. Cruz get a front-row seat to the devastation that endless wars
have brought to the area and how his students fathers’ force to become fighters at a
young age. Through wars ravaged the community and the children’s lives, the teacher
Vigo Cruz (who happens to be a gifted toy-maker) learns to bring joy and hope to the
victims of war.
10. “Serbis”
A film by Cannes award-winning director Brillantes Mendoza and written by
Armando Lao.
Serbis follows the Pineda family’s struggles through bigamy, unwanted
pregnancy, possible incest and the upkeep of a seedy movie theater that is both living
quarters and livelihood of Pinedas. A movie of rich subplots and interesting characters,
“Serbis” has an all-star cast composed of Gina Pareno, Jacklyn Jose, Coco Martin, Julio
Diaz and Mercedes Cabral. The film won the prestigious Palm d’ or award.

2012

1. AngNawawala
Gibson Bonifacio stopped speaking as a child. He is now twenty years old, returning to
Manila from his studies abroad, his first visit home in three years. He finds his family trying to
keep together, his mother still hurting from tragic loss in the past. In the backdrop of vibrant
local music scene, his childhood best friend reaches out to him, and he finds a chance at his first
real romantic relationship. Amidst the holidays, Gibson reconsiders and redefines his relationships
with his family, his friends and with himself.

2. Sta. Nina by Emmanuel Quindo Palo


When PaulinoMungcal and his co-worker in a lahar-filled quarry unexpected dig up the
remains of his 2 years old daughter Marikit, they discover that she showed no signs of decay.
Could this be a miracle, and could she—despite death-cure the sick? Inspired by whatever
healing power the deceased child may have, Pol asks the church too declare her a saint. But
how, when her resurgence stirs up emotions buried by time and shores up questions about pure
love, guilt, sin and salvation?

3. Bwakaw by Jun Robles Lana


Bwakaw is a drama-comedy about growing old, and eveyone’s fear of growing old alone.
Rene is gay man who came out of the closet at age 70. Ailing in his twilight years, he thinks
it is now too late for love, even companionship, and that all there is to look forward to is
death. He has made a will, bequething his few possessions to his even fewer friends.
Everything is packed and labeled, ready for distribution. He has even paid for coffin, taking
advantage of a funeral hom’s Summer Sale. Nowadays the only companion Rene has his
Bwakaw, a stray dog that hangs around his house and follows him wherever he goes. As
Rene waits for the day of his death, he gets the surprise of his life when it is Bwakaw
suddenly falls ill and is diagnosed with cancer. Rene is surprisingly affected and he realizes
that he values Bwakaw more than he thinks. In his struggle to get Bwakaw cured, Rene finds
comfort in the most unlikely person: Sol, a trycicle driver who helps him bring Bwakaw to
the vet and befriends him. Buoyed by Sol’s frienship, Rene starts living. Little by little he
discovers simple joys. To the surprise of his friends, he even has his hair dyed to look
younger. One day, he finally decides to make a move to Sol. The revelation that Rene is gay
and has a feelings for him surprises and disgusts Sol. He rejects Rene and leaves in anger. In
the meantime, Bwakaw’s condition gets worse. Not even Rene’s ancient Santo Entierro( a
supposedly miraculous statue osf Jesus Christ) can save Bwakaw dies, and Rene’s neighbors
help him burry the faithful dog. But Bwakaw’s death, even while it was still only imminent,
has made a difference. Rene has a new appreciation for life and what is most important. He
unpack the things that he has already willed to other people and make his house more
inhabitable. He is, after all, still alive.
4. Requiems! By Loy Arcenas
Circus hijinks surround the barangay of sta. Maria in the midst of an international murder
sensation. Swanie, Sta. Maria’s barangay chair and a distant relative of the killer, tries to
gain political points by staging a wake for the criminal-turned-celebrity. Meanwhile in faraway
Manila, Joanna, Swanie’s runaway son, navigate his way through to labyrinthine
bureaucracy, to give a neighbor a proper burial. With this two unrelated deaths, estranged
mother and son each bury the dead long shelved in their hearts. Amidst these unspoken
family burials, the neighborhoods’ penchant for funerals fiestas, gossip and secrets, bizarre
social events and sheer mix of scandal and inebriation complete the picture of dying the
Pinoy way.

5. The Animals by Gino M. Santos


Set in an affluent, upper middle class village in the suburbs, “The Animals” chronicles a
day in life of Jake, Trina, and Alex, who go through the musings that every kid in high school
has to deal with. All Jake wants to do is have a good time, Alex just wants to fit in and Trina
simply wants more. A very vivid picture is painted of life in high school after the final bell
rings, as well as a different side of the Philippines and what is happening to its privileged
children.

6. Mater Dolorosa
It begins with a burst of action, as a man is gunned down in th street, his wife left to
tend to him as he lies bleeding on the pavement. It then jumps to years later, when that
woman (Gina Alajar) is running her husband’s crime empire while trying to keep her family
together. A new major brings change to her business and she and her family are forced to
deal with this new development.

7. AngBabaesaSeptik Tank
Eugene Domingo fell down to the septik tank. This is how the film eneded and how the
film gave justice to the title.
Award: Best Screen play, Best Direction, Best Actress (Eugene Domingo), Best Film and
Audience Award.

8. Transit
Transit tackles the life of OFW’s and Pinoy immigrants in Israel that suffered from the
deporting their children if found illegitimate to live in the country.

9. Ekstra
This is a story of the struggle, triumph and life of every bit players.Award: Best Screenpley
and Best Actress (Vilma Santos)

10. Six Degrees of separation from Lilia Cuntapay


This a story of well-loved but not well-known actress who always play
mananaggal/aswang/white lady or what you in your mind that is scary named Lilia Cuntapay.
She should have been in Ekstra.
Award: Best Actress (Lilia Cuntapay), Best Editing, Best Screenplay, Special Jury Prize (all
Cinema One Originals Film Fest)

11. Babagwa (Spider’s Lair)


This is a story of a guy name Greg (Alex Medina), a Conman, who tricks other guys
(probably bis or gays) on facebook, asking for money. But, a woman (Alma Concepcion)
would change all Greg’s attitude and his decision ti live with that woman is life changing.

12. Metro Manila


The story of the plight family that left their life in Banawe and chose to face the chaotic
world in Metro Manila.
Award: Audience choice: World Dramatic (Sundance Film Festival), Best British Independent
Film

13. Signos (The Sign)


The indie film tackle environmental issues, superstitions and unexplainable things that
haunt the characters.
Award: Best Foreign Film (Lone Star International Film Festival)
