Introduction to Poetry 7 (stage 4) 5 Weeks

Standard 3.6- The program that I have improved caters to the learning needs of all students,
including lower ability students.

Standard 3.6- The resources included in the program have been enhanced, in order to
maximise the learning opportunities for gifted and talented students.

LESSON 3
Free-Form poems
 Using their laptops, students are going to look for a free-form poem online. Once students have found
a poem, they must answer the following questions:

- “What is a free-form poem?”

- “What make free-form poems different to other poems?”

Comparing and Contrasting poems- Venn Diagram

 Teacher hands out two poems and a Venn Diagram template. The students are going to read the two
poems and then they are going to compare and contrast the poems using the Venn Diagram. The
students are going to identify the different themes in each poem and then outline which themes are
similar in each poem. Students are going to choose one similar theme from each poem. They are going
to provide examples of how the poem communicates that particular theme.
Appendix Q
The Last Songman
Archie Weller

Alone I sit.
I wait.
I wait.
My country cries red tears
for there are no more songs.
No more stories around
the everlasting fire.
No more young men here
to dance and leap like flames.
I am the last of the song men.
I go.
I go
to join Purpupriki
amongst the stars.
The stars,
flowers
of my country.

Sun Arise
Rolf Harris & Harry Butler

Sun arise, she bring in the morning

Sun arise, bring in the morning , fluttering
Her skirts all around.

Sun arise, she come with the dawning.

Sun arise, come with the dawning,
Spreading all the light all around.

Sun arise, on the kangaroo paw.

Sun arise, on the kangaroo paw, glistening
the dew all around.

Sun arise, filling all the hollows,

Sun arise, filling all the hollows, lighting up
The hills all around.

Sun arise, come with the dawning,

Sun arise, she come every day.
Sun arise, bring in the morning,
Sun arise, every, every, every, every, day.
She drive away the darkness, every day,
Drive away the darkness,
Bringing back the warmth to the ground.

Sun arise, oh, oh,

Sun arise, oh, oh,
Spreading all the light all around.

Sun arise, bring in the morning.

Sun arise, bring in the morning, spreading
all the light all around.
