‘Summary:
Bedding, joints, cleats and faults are the principal mesoscopic structures
which are kinematical active in the relaxation, sag, and collapse of the
layered, sedimentary succession about some Canadian coal mines.
Tectonic slippage has produced a family of detachment surfaces on
bedding and has destroyed to varying degrees the depositional layering,
joints and cleats of the coal. Joints statistically perpendicular to bedding,
pervade the rock mass and vary erratically in number and spacing both
vertically through the coal measures and laterally in the same bed. Where
preserved in the coal, joints commonly cut the seams at angles of about 45
degrees. Extension, contraction and wrench faults occur either individually
or in swarms, Each type intersects the layering at a preferred angle:
extension faults at 60 degrees, contraction faults at 30 degrees and wrench
faults at 90 degrees. The first type shows no preferred orientation relative
to the local tectonic strike, the second commonly parallels the strike and
the third is perpendicular to the strike, Extension and wrench faults
generally have stratigraphic separations of only a few feet whereas
Contraction faults may have very large separations and may seriously
impede or destroy the possibility of economic coal mining. The ability of the
coal to support the roof may be markedly reduced through shear, either
regionally by interbed slip or locally by contraction faulting. Under these
circumstances thick zones of destressed coal may flank the ribs or occur in
bands, effective roof spans are enlarged and disaggregation of the rock
mass is accelerated

certaines houilldres canadiennes.
faisceaux.
Introduction
Coal mines in the eastern Cordillera of Canada provide an outstanding
opportunity to study the fabric of layered, sedimentary rock masses. Itis
therefore possible to examine the rock fabric in different thrust plates,
through large stratigraphic intervals, and over large areas in one and the
same bed. Meaningful samples of the structural fabric of the mine rocks
‘an be taken and confidence limits set on the conclusions based on these
data. A primary purpose for this investigation is to relate the rock fabric to
closure of mine cavities and thereby to assist the coal industry in the
development of safe and economical mining practices. The data provide
moreover a valuable insight into the kinematics and dynamics of translation
and deformation of thrust plates.
