This document outlines four design problems involving fracture mechanics:
1) Design of rectangular plates with and without discontinuities subjected to tensile loads.
2) Derivation of near tip stress fields for plane crack problems under mode II loading.
3) Design procedure for a shaft with a circumferential groove under variable torque and bending using fracture mechanics.
4) Estimation of remaining life for a component with a detected crack under fatigue loading while stored in corrosive and non-corrosive environments.

Write the conventional design methodology applicable for
a) the design of a rectangular plate without any. discontinuity and subjected to tensile load and b) the design of a rectangular plate with any discontinuity such as elliptical and circular holes and subjected to tensile load c) State the reasons with mathematical expressions, why the conventional design methodology cannot be implemented for the design of components containing sharp cracks. 2. Derive the near tip stress field for plane crack problems (both for plane stress and plane strain case) for mode-II case. 3. Explain the design procedure taking an example of shaft containing a circumferential groove subjected to variable torque and constant bending moment and estimate the life of it by fracture mechanics approach. (The procedure must contain with necessary design equations and mathematical expressions for implementing the fracture mechanics approach). 4. A machine is used only for the first five days of a year and it is stored in an open ground in the rest of the year where it is subjected to a corrosive atmosphere. A crucial component of the machine is made of an alloy steel and its critical SIF is known as 70 MPa√ m.Just before using the machine, a centre crack of length 2a = 5 mm has been detected in the component. During the operation of the machine the component is subjected to a fatigue load of frequency 25 cycles per minute with its maximum stress of 130 MPa and minimum stress zero. The material of the component follows the Paris law of fatigue growth with its constants C = 7×10-12; m = 3, for K in the units of MPa√ m and ‘a’ in 'm'. Make an estimate of the remaining life of the component if the crack growth rate under the corrosive conditions is 1.6×10-7mm/s. For the estimate to be conservative, neglect the nucleation time for both fatigue and growth. Also, estimate the life of the component if the machine is stored in a non- corrosive environment.
