Course Title: Emergency Medicine

Goals of the Course: By the end of the course, Students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the essential knowledge required to diagnose and manage patients with
common emergency medical conditions.
2. Take a relevant and focused history from a patient with an urgent medical condition.
3. Perform physical examination.
4. Demonstrate ability to order and interpret common investigations used in emergency
medicine.
5. Demonstrate the capacity to differentiate and treat common urgent conditions.
6. Perform common lifesaving and procedural skills in emergency medicine such as Basic
life support.
7. Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective exchange of
information and collaboration with patients, their families and health professionals.
8. Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and adherence
to ethical principles and apply these to acute care settings.

1. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
2. Shock & Anaphylaxis
3. Acute pulmonary edema and Acute severe asthma
4. Hypertensive emergencies
5. Diabetic Ketoacidosis & Hypoglycemia

6. Status epilepticus
7. Acute coronary syndromes (Acute myocardial infarction)
8. Acute Upper GI bleeding
9. Diagnosis & Management of comatose patient

2 Cardiology: Recongnition and management of Acute myocardial infarction and
lifethreatening arythmia
3 Respiratory Medicine: Airway Obstruction, Asthma, Respiratory failure, Pulmonary
embolism
4 Neurologic emergencies: Acute stroke, Acute mental status changes, Meningitis,
Migraine
5 Acid base disorders: identification and management of acid base disorders
6 Fluid and Electrolyte disorders: Dehydration, Hyperkalemia, hypernatremia & other
disorders
7 Infectious disease & Sepsis: Sepsis and shock, pneumonia, cellulitis
8 Hematologic emergencies: Anemia and disorders of blood cells
9 Oncologic emergencies: Acute leukemia and neutropenia
10 Renal emergencies: Acute Renal failure
11 Hepatic disorders: Acute hepatic failure
12 Environmental emergencies: Hyperthermia, Envenomation and environmental toxin
13 Vascular emergencies: DVT
14 Pain management in emergency setting
15 Other Emergencies: Thyroid storm and Adrenal crisis
16 Legal and Ethical aspects in Emergency medicine
