Gusset plates design

Load are taken from StaadPro Analysis

Axial Load = 65.1 kN

Moment = 46.6kNm

Area = 250 x 250 =62500 mm2

Modulus Z = 250 x 2502/6 = 26.04 x 106 mm3

Maximum Pressure:

65.1 x 103 52 x 106

Pmax = + 5
=¿ 21.01N/mm2
62500 26.04 x 10

The gussets are first checked to ensure that buckling does not occur. Using 10mm thick plates:

Design strength pyg = 275 N/mm2

Gusset outstand: 49mm

This is not to exceed 13εt = 143.52m

The gusset is a semi compact section

Shear on one gusset is:

0.5 x 5.2 x 49 x 125 0.5 x 18.94 x 49 x 125

Fv = + =¿80.27 kN
1000 1000

Moment on one gusset is:

M =((15.93 x 16.33) + (64.34 x 32.67))/1000 = 2.36 kNm

The shear capacity :

Pv = (0.9 x 0.6 x 275 x 152 x 10)/1000 = 225.72kN

The moment capacity:

275 x 10 x 2502
Mc = = 28.65kNm
6 x 106

The gusset plates are satisfactory

Gusset plate to column weld design

Column to gusset and base plate weld:

Load per weld = (65.1/2) + (52/0.154) = 370.21kN

Length of weld = 370.21 – 2(8) = 354.21

Load per mm = 370.21/354.21 = 1.05 kN/mm

Use 8mm fillet weld, strength 1.4kN/mm

Gusset to base plate weld:

Consider 1.0mm wide strip at the edge of the base plate. Load on one weld:

= (0.5 x21.01 x125)/1000.=1.31kN/mm

Provide 8mm fillet weld,strength 1.4kN/mm

Base plate thickness:

MB = 0.5 x 21.01 x 47.82 = 2.4 x 104 Nmm

Mc = (2626.5x77.2)-(0.5 x 21.01x1252)=3.86x 104 Nmm

Design strength py = 275 N/mm2

The moment resistance of the base plate (Section 4.13.7.3)

MR = 1.2pypt2/6

Thickness t = ( 6 x3.86 x 104 / 1.2x275)0.5 = 26.5mm

Provide 30mmthick base plate

Bolt design

65.1 x 103 52 x 106

Design strength of concrete, Pmax = + =¿21.01N/mm2
62500 26.04 x 105

Design strength of the bolts for grade 8.8 (Table 32) = 450 N/mm 2

The depth of neutral axis:

15 x 21.01
X=( ¿ ( 215 )=¿ 88.55mm
15 ( 21.01 ) + 450

Lever arm z = 215-88.55/3 =185.48mm

Take moments about centre line of the holding-down bolts:

M1=52+65.1(0.09) = 57.86kNm

The compressive force in the concrete:

C = 57.86 x 103 / 185.48 = 311.95 kN

The base width required to limit concrete stress to 21.01 N/mm 2 is

2 x 311.95 x 103
b= = 333mm
21.01 x 88.55

Adopt a base width 250mm. The maximum concrete stress

The tension in the holding down bolts:

T = 311.95 – 65.1 = 246.85kN

Tensile stress area per bolt for two bolts:

246.85 x 103
At = = 274.28mm2
2 x 450

Provide 6 No. 20mm diameter bolt tensile stress area = 245mm 2 per bolt.
