The ten good characters

In the name of Allah the most merciful, the most gracious

Know, may Allah guide me and you to the best of characters, that from the most greatest characters are
ten:

The first: if you meet a Muslim, then greet upon him, by saying: (‫)السالم عليكم ورحمة هللا وبركاته‬. (May Allah’s
peace, mercy and blessings be upon you),

And if he greets upon you, then say:

‫و عليكم السالم ورحمة هللا وبركاته‬.

(May Allah’s peace, mercy and blessings be upon you).

The second: if you wish to enter upon anyone, then seek permission, by standing to the right side of the
door or to its left, if he permits you, enter, and if you are asked to go back: then go back.

The third: mention the name of Allah in beginning of your eating and drinking, (by) saying: ‫( بسم هللا‬in the
name of Allah), and eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearer to you, and if you
finish(eating) then lick your fingers, and say: ‫( الحمد هّٰلِل‬all praise is due to Allah alone).

The fourth: speak with pleasant words in goodness, and lower your voice, unhurriedly in your speech,
and listen to one who is speaking to you by facing on to him, and do not interrupt him(the speaker), and
do not proceed in between the elder in the speech.

The fifth: if you come to your bed, then do ablution, and sleep on your right side, and recite Ayat al Kursi
once, and bring together both your palm, and read Surah al Ikhlas and ِ‫( ُم َعوّ َذ َت ْين‬Surah al Falaq and Surah
an Naas) in it(both the palms), and blow in it(both the palms), and wipe with it(both the palms) as much
as possible from your body, do it three times.

The sixth: if you sneeze, then cover your face with your hand or with your cloth, and praise Allah (
‫)الحمدهللا‬, and if anyone responds to you(by making dua for you) and says: ‫( يرحمك هللا‬may Allah have mercy
upon you), then say: "‫" َي ْهدِي ُك ُم هَّللا ُ َويُصْ لِ ُح َبالَ ُك ْم‬. "May Allah guide you and set right your affairs."

The seventh: repelling the yawning as much as possible, and hold your hand against your mouth, and do
not say: Ahh Ahh.
The eight: if you reach a gathering, then greet(the gathering by saying ‫)السالم عليكم ورحمة هللا وبركاته‬,

And take your seat where the gathering ends(if a person enters he sits after him and if a person enter he
sits after that person and so on I.e. sitting close by

To one another), and do not sit in between the sun and shadow, and do not part in between two people
except with their permission(while sitting), and do not command anyone to stand from his gathering,
and make space for the one who enters, and remember Allah in it(the gathering) and the least of
remembrance of Allah is expiation of the gathering is to say:

َ ‫ك َوأَ ُتوبُ إِلَ ْي‬


‫ك‬ َ ‫ك أَ ْش َه ُد أَنْ الَ إِلَ َه إِالَّ أَ ْنتَ أَسْ َت ْغ ِف ُر‬
َ ‫ك اللَّ ُه َّم َو ِب َحمْ ِد‬
َ ‫ ُسب َْحا َن‬،

“Glory and praise be to You, O Allah, there is no god but You, I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to
You.”

The ninth: give the road it’s due right, (by) lowering your gaze, and abstaining the harm, replying to the
greeting, ordaining the good and forbading the evil.

Tenth: wear the pleasant ones from the clothes, and the best of it is white, and let not cross it below
your ankles, and begin wearing with your right side and (through) your left side (while) removing.

Completed by the praise of Allah.
