Implicit bias refers to the
brain’s automatic,
instant association of
stereotypes or attitudes
toward particular groups,
without our conscious
awareness.
Implicit Biases Are…
✓ Attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding,
actions, and decision making in an unconscious manner
✓ A natural function of our brain that is associative in
nature – a survival instinct
✓ Our biases are activated involuntarily without our
awareness or voluntary control
Biases Comes From…
✓ The Culture
✓ A series of associations collected over our lifetime through
exposure to direct and indirect messages
✓ Not accessible through introspection alone
✓ They reside deep in our subconscious
✓ Can cause us to have feelings about others outside of our
voluntary control
Ways to Eliminate Implicit Bias in Public Health
✓Have a basic understanding of the cultures of those you serve
✓Do not stereotype – individuate
✓Understand and respect the tremendous power of implicit biases
✓Recognize situations that magnify stereotyping bias
✓Know the CLAS Standards
✓Know YOUR biases
