Verbal communication is the sharing of information by using words. It is what most people
use as a method of communication. Verbal communication is important because if you do not
use the right words, you will cause confusion and you will not be able to communicate what
you want. The important forms of verbal communication are given in Table 1.2.
The effectiveness of the verbal communication depends on the tone of the
speaker, clarity of speech, volume, speed, body language and the quality of words
used in the conversation. In the case of the verbal communication, the feedback is
immediate since there are a simultaneous transmission and receipt of the message
by the sender and receiver respectively.
The sender must keep his speech tone high and clearly audible to all and must
design the subject matter keeping the target audience in mind. The sender should
always cross check with the receiver to ensure that the message is understood in
absolutely the same way as it was intended. Such communication is more prone to
errors as sometimes the words are not sufficient to express the feelings and
emotions of a person.
The success of the verbal communication depends not only on the speaking ability
of an individual but also on the listening skills. How effectively an individual
listens to the subject matter decides the effectiveness of the communication. The
verbal communication is applicable in both the formal and informal kind of
situations.
Outside of the organization, verbal communication may take the form of phone
calls, face-to-face meetings, speeches, teleconferences, or video conferences.
Business managers having effective verbal communication skills can communicate
more precisely with their subordinates. Similarly, employees having excellent
communication skills are highly valued and demanded in any organization.
The way employees communicate with each other portrays an organization‟s image and this
image could be the first impression or the last.
Good verbal communication skills of the employees of an organization foster excellent business
relationships with other organizations, customers, suppliers, etc.
Good verbal communication at the workplace is critical to the companies with a workforce from
a diverse background. It helps reduce the barriers produced because of cultural and language
differences. Many multinational companies arrange training to inculcate effective
communication skills in their employees which prove very beneficial in the long run.
Effective verbal communication between employer and employee also increases job satisfaction
level.
Employees feel secure when they are communicated effectively. Receiving the right and
updated information from their superiors boost their confidence and productivity.
Excellent verbal communication skills increase the ability of the individuals to share ideas,
thoughts and concerns with each other.
Advantages of verbal communication:
Verbal communication is easy and quick. You can say what you want and get a quick
response. It is an easier form of communication when you have to exchange ideas. You keep
changing your communication as per the other person‟s reply.
Disadvantages of verbal communication:
The most common disadvantage of verbal communication is the cultural differences
between the sender and receiver of the information. These differences may be due to the use of
different languages, inability to understand the colloquial phrases used by the other individual,
and the accent. Since verbal communication depends on words, sometimes the meanings
become confusing and difficult to understand if the right words are not used.
ROLE OF NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION IN LANGUAGE:
Non-verbal communication is the message we send to others without using any words as
shown in Figure 1.4. We send signals and messages to others, through expressions gestures and
body postures. In this session, you will learn about the non-verbal method of communication,
its types and importance. You will learn to use the correct body language, like gestures, eye
contact, handshake, etc
Facial expressions:
The face is an important communicator. It is commonly said that the face is the index of the
mind.
It expresses the type of emotions or feelings such as joy, love, interest, sorrow, anger, annoyance,
confusion, enthusiasm, fear, hatred surprise, and uncertainty.
Facial expressions are indicated through the mouth (open, wide or closed), eyelids (raised or
lowered), nose (wrinkled or relaxed), cheeks (drawn up or back) and the forehead (lowered or
raised).
Within the facial area, eyes are especially effective for indicating attention and interest. However,
interpretations of facial expressions differ from culture to culture.
Smiling is a powerful cue that transmits:
Happiness.
Friendliness.
Warmth.
Liking.
Affiliation.
Thus, if you smile frequently you will be perceived as more likable, friendly, warm and
approachable.
Smiling is often contagious and students will react favorably and learn more.
Gestures:
If you fail to gesture while speaking, you may be perceived as boring, stiff and un-animated.
A lively and animated teaching style captures students‟ attention, makes the material more
interesting, facilitates learning and provides a bit of entertainment.
Head nods, a form of gestures, communicate positive reinforcement to students and indicate that
you are listening.
Gestures are movements of the arms, legs, hands, and head.7 Some authors opine that gesture is the
deliberate body movement because they express specific and intentional meaning.
For example;
a wave of the hand has a specific meaning-“hello” or “good-bye”; a forefinger and a thumb
touching to form a circle have the meaning -“ok”.
Alike facial expressions, interpretations of some gestures also differ across cultures.
For example, in Europe, raising thumb is used to convey that someone has done something
excellent while in Bangladesh the same gesture means something idiotic.
