Content: Properties of Useful and Harmful Materials

Content Standard: Properties of materials to determine whether they are useful or harmful.

Performance Standard: Uses local, recyclable solid and or liquid materials in making useful
product.

Learning Competency: Use the properties of materials whether they are useful or harmful.

Code: S5MT – Ia-b - 1

I. Objective:
Identify the different properties of liquid materials.

II. Subject Matter: Properties of Liquid

A. Science Concept/Ideas
Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Volume the amount of space an object occupies. It is expressed in cubic
centimeters (cm3)
Density is the ratio of its mass to its volume.
Dense having a high mass per unit volume.
Buoyant able to float
Buoyancy is an upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an
immersed object. In a column of fluid, pressure increases with depth as a result
of the weight of the overlying fluid.
B. Materials:
Egg, water, salt, small potato, 500 ml of water, salt, beaker, weighing scale
C. Reference:
Elementary Science Explorer pp. 121-125
D. Process Skills:
Observing, experimenting, communicating, inferring, measuring, recording,
classifying, comparing, predicting, experimenting, concept mapping, and
hypothesizing.
E. Values:
Cooperation, working harmoniously with others

III. Learning Tasks:

A. Engagement:
1. Preliminary Activities

1
2. Review
Game: group the class into two. Have them solve the problem.
What is the density of liquid with a mass of 50g and a volume of 10ml?
3. Motivation
Video clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMlXU97E-uQ
Have the children watch a video.
Let them tell something about what they have watched.

B. Exploration:
a. What to do
1. Show two different jars with water (the other jar contains soil solution) and
two eggs.
Ask: what will happen to the egg if we place it in this jar?
Have them observe what happen to the egg. Based from their observation
have them ask questions.
Write all the hypotheses of the pupils.
2. Have them prepare for the activity to test their hypotheses.
3. Set standard to be followed while performing the activity.

b. Activity Proper
1. The class will be grouped into five. They will be given two minutes to perform
their activity and another two minutes to discuss their observation with their
group.
2. Please see LM Activity #8, Make me Float.
3. Teacher supervision.

C. Explanation:
1. Presentation of output
a. Reporting the results of the activity.
b. Discuss and analyse the result.

2. Finding out
a. Questions:
What property of liquid makes something to float on water?
How do we get the density of solid materials?
Why do potato floats on water?

D. Elaboration:
1. Deepening
Situational Analysis
Your family is planning to go on a vacation in Isla Verde. You have to bring so
many things for this once in a life time vacation. What do you think will
happen if you are going to ride on a small boat? Why?

2. Application
How can you make a needle float in water?

3. Generalization
Why do objects float or sink in the water?
What do you have to consider in making the solid float in a liquid?
What is density?

2
4. Valuing
On your way to the Isla Verde, you notice that there are no trash cans in the
vicinity. Where should you put your waste?

E. Evaluation:
Directions: Identify the property of liquid. Write true if the statement is correct and
false if is not.
1. A rock will float in river.
2. It is easier to floating in the sea than in the pool.
3. Oil is denser than water that is why it floats over water.
4. Woods will sink in the ocean.
5. A ship floats in ocean.

IV. Assignment
Make a research on how density affects the buoyancy of an object.
