MADRE DE CACAO AS INSECT REPELLENT
Based in Lipa City of Batangas Province, Philippines, the researchers have taken into
consideration the climate of the country and what it means to the daily environment residents are
exposed of. A warm and wet environment is an ideal place for the breeding of vectors like
mosquitoes. With the increase of these disease-carrying insects, there is also an increase in the
vulnerability of the residents when exposed to infectious insect-borne disease.
The researchers conducted surveys in Barangay Mataas na Lupa of Lipa City, and according to
these surveys, 70% of the respondents have agreed to knowing the people who have been diagnosed
with an insect-borne disease, including dengue, making them even more cautious about their
surroundings.
But 50% of the respondents believe that the long-term use of insecticides within a household is
considerably dangerous especially with infants or pets around. And a total of 88% are looking forward
to the development of a safer alternative to these insecticides, giving the researchers a great
motivation in proceeding with their product.
