Alternative Assignment (BS & PFM) (15% of the overall assessment)

Please note that this is an ALTERNATIVE to the original Assignment (BS & PFM) uploaded to
Moodle earlier. Students may choose to continue working on the original Assignment (BS & PFM)
[with a revised submission date and format, available on Moodle] or work on this alternative instead.

The objective of the assignment related to building surveying (BS) and property and facility
management (PFM) is to enhance students’ awareness of the typical work processes, problems
encountered and skills of a professional BS and/or PFM.

Written submission

Based on knowledge gained from the study pack on Moodle and relevant references, prepare and
submit a written report on the followings:

1. Outline the preparations that are essential to complete a building survey for a building of your
choice. You could either refer to the building that you are currently living in, or describe a
building with attributes such as age, height, use, location, etc.
2. Elaborate on the precautions and skills that can be employed during the survey. Describe the
typical defects that can be found in the chosen type of building and suggest tools and methods
applicable to diagnose the cause(s) of the defects, with appropriate remedial measures.
3. Recommend practical measures to improve the property and facility management of the target
building with a view to preventing the defects identified occurring again.
4. Reflection of your experience and further thoughts in undertaking the assignment.

Your individual report should be type-written in MS WORD in font 12, single-line spacing,
excluding photographs, diagrams, sketches, and other appendices, etc. in not more than 3000 words.
Your report should cover elaborations of the knowledge and skills acquired on the above issues.
Views and comments must be supported by accurate observations, and evidence such as photographs,
current legislation and/or published information, with proper references. There should also be a
‘reflection’ section detailing your further thoughts after the exercise.

Submit an e-copy of the report to Moodle on or before 3 May 2020 (Sun) 23:59pm. All late
submissions will be down-graded based on one grade/day of delay. Submissions received after 10
May 2020 will not be marked and will result in zero mark being awarded for this individual
assignment.
