c. Checking of Attendance
B. Review
What was our lesson yesterday? Ma’am, It’s all about joint and combined
variation.
Very Good.

What is joint variation? It takes place when one quantity varies directly
as the product of two or more other quantities.
Very Good.

How about combined variation? It refers to a variation which one quantity

varies directly or jointly as the other quantities
and inversely as other quantities.

You are right.

Before we proceed to our next topic let

us first refresh our skills on translating
mathematical statement into
mathematical equation.

Try to answer these problems.

Directions: Translate the following

mathematical statement into
mathematical equation.

1. A varies jointly as B and C. 1. A=kBC

2. The volume of a circular cone 2. V =kh r 2

varies jointly as its height and the
square of the radius of its base.

3. B is directly proportional to the k A2

square of A and inversely 3. B= 3
C
proportional to the cube of C.

4. N varies directly as P and inversely kP

as Q. 4. N=
Q
5. The pitch of a stretched vibrating
string varies directly as the square
k t2
of the tension and inversely as the 5. P=
length of the string. l
C. What to Process

Let us have our first example for joint

variation.

Example #1
If y varies jointly as x and z, and
y=6 when x=10 and z=8, find y when x=4 and
z=40.
First step we must translate the mathematical
equation.

Based on the problem, what is our equation? Ma’am, y=kxz is or equation.

Very Good.

From our equation, we need to find the value

of k.

To solve for k, we need to substitute the value

of x, z and y.

What is the value of x? 10

Very Good.

How about our z? z=8

You’re right.

How about the value of y? y=6.

Since, we know the value now of all the

variables let us substitute it to our equation.

What is our equation now? Our equation is 6=k ( 10 ) ( 8 ) .

Very Good.

Now, we need to find the value of k.

Anyone who could answer the value of k? 3

The value of k is .
40
How did you come up to that answer?
Explain your answer. 6=k ( 10 ) ( 8 )
6=80 k
6
=k
80
3
Very Good. Substitute the variable to the =k
40
equation then manipulate to find the value of k.

3
Sionce, k = , the equation becomes
40
3
y= xz . To solve for y, substitute x=4 and
40
z=40 in the equation.

Who wants to find the value of y? Ma’am.

Ok.Try to solve also on your notebook.

(After 2 minutes)

Explain your answer. 3

y= xz
40
3
y= ( 4 ) ( 40 )
Very Good. 40
Do you understand? y=12

Example #2 Yes, Ma’am.

If a varies jointly as b and c and inversely as

the square of d, and a=120 when b=5, c=2 and
d=9 find a when b=12, c=9 and d=9.

This example is for combined variation.

Ok, class what is our equation?

kbc
a=
Very Good. d2

Now, we must substitute the value of a, b, c

and d. Now, what is the equation now?

What is the value now of our k? k ( 5) ( 2)

Our equation now is 120= .
92
Very Good. Explain your answer.
k=972.

k ( 5) ( 2)
Very Good. 120=
92
Now our k=972, to solve the value of a 9,720=10 k
substitute the value of b, c and d. 972=k

Who wants to answer on the board?

Try to answer on your notebook.

(After 2 minutes)

Ok. Explain your answer.

kbc
a=
d2
Very Good. ( 972 )( 12 ) ( 9 )

a=1,296

None Ma’am.
D. Seatwork:
If you do not have any question, please
get ½ piece of paper & answer these
problems on your own.

1. The area of a rectangle is jointly Answer:

proportional to its length (l) and A=192 sq . cm
width (ω) and A=96 sq. cm when A2=lk =4
l=6 cm andω=4 cm, determine the
area of a rectangle whose length is
8 cm and width is 6 cm.

2. t varies directly as the square of x Answer:

and inversely as y. If z=10 when k x2
x=10 and y=4, find k and the t=
y
equation of the variation. 2
k=
