ABSTRACT
INRODUCTION
Pollution being the most threat full issue is expanding its adverse effects
day-by-day. Pollution whether related to air, soil, water or noise have been caused
due to industrialization and urbanization. The exhaust from refineries, disposing
waste into the water bodies, loud noise of machines and automobiles are all the
sources of pollution. Noise is considered as the most pervasive pollutant, it
constitute the most disturbing among the city pollutants and is a serious urban
crisis in metropolitan cities.
Noise pollution caused by weak urban planning leads to a number of hearing
impairments, cardiovascular effects, stress, tension, blood pressure, loss of
concentration in work, damage to buildings and infrastructures and various others.
The pupils exposed to noise are most likely to develop numerous auditory and non-
auditory problems directly impacting personal family and working life.
METHODOLOGY
The present study was conducted to investigate the level of awareness about noise
pollution among students. A detailed survey was conducted among the students
using a structured questionnaire to understand the opinion of the students
regarding the impact of noise on their daily lives and the awareness on various
factors regarding noise pollution. The sample for the study consisted of High
School students of Mount Carmel G.H.S.S, Kottayam. The tool comprised of
questionnaire consisting of 20 items. The concept for the study noise pollution was
selected from standard VIII Basic Science text book. The content was thoroughly
analyzed for preparing the items for the questionnaire.
The study revealed that about 93%of the students are aware of noise pollution. But
still the students does not perceive noise as a harmful agent. They were not aware
of the health hazards caused due to noise pollution. The research aimed to acquire
a greater understanding of how the population of the students, mainly in High
School section perceive noise pollution. And the results showed that36% of the
students are facing problem of noise pollution. Among these students 36% were
disturbed due to any one particular noise on a daily basis. 76.6% of the students
know that there are rules and regulations regarding noise control, but were not
aware about existing rules and regulations like time limit for loud music, the
frequency limit etc. 93.3% of the respondent knows that noise pollution can cause
some health issues. But they are unaware of the various health problems caused by
continuous exposure to noise. They hardly consider the effects caused due to noise
pollution.
From the survey it was clear that 29% of the students are facing noise
pollution due to heavy traffic and the other two main sources of noise pollution are
human beings and machines. It was estimated 25%and 22% respectively. The data
showed that only 6% of the students are affected by noise from religious places.
Almost 67% of the students believe that proper guidance and awareness
through education will be a most effective way to reduce noise pollution. Only 3%
of the population believes that proper actions from the part of police against those
who violates the rules and regulations can reduce noise pollution.
