The Altamira cave is in Santillana del Mar, in Cantabria, Spain. The cave was
discovered in 1879.
In 1879, amateur archaeologist Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola was led by his eight-year-
old daughter María to discover the cave's drawings. The cave was excavated by
Sautuola and archaeologist Juan Vilanova y Piera from the University of Madrid,
resulting in a much acclaimed publication in 1880 which interpreted the paintings as
Paleolithic in origin.
This cave is so important because it shows us that the men and women of Palaeolithic
painted the most realistic animals of that period.

You can not visit the cave because it is closed but you can visit a replica of it in the
museum near the cave.
The advantages of opening the caves are that you can see the real pictures and admire
them but a lot of people there pollute them and they can be damaged by the people
breath.

in the north of Spain. Near the cave there is a museum that has a replica of the cave.
Altamira cave was discovered by a Asturian man because his dog was following an
animal and the animal entered in the cave. Years later a Little girl discovered the cave
and she told his father. His father was Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola.
The cave is important because it has the most important pictures of the Palaeolithic age.
Opening the cave is good for the children because they learn how was the Palaeolithic
pictures but we need them good for the future, if people visit them they will get bad.
