SCHOOL BOARD MEETING 2

Las Vegas, NV CCSD School Board Meeting, May 16, 2019. The school board trustees were

given updates on several bills that could impact CCSD in many ways. One of the most important

being a bill (SB 543) that will change the way that funding is formulated for the K-12 education

system in Nevada. The current formula is 52 years old and needs modernization, this new bill

passing is CCSD’s top priority. My biggest question is, how will Bill SB 543 change the funding

formula for CCSD for the better? This new bill would make the new formula much clearer and

more concise in comparison to the confusing and outdated formula that we currently use. It will

also allow all monies that are intended for K-12 funding to stay in that funding area instead of it

being able to be moved around. Ensuring that CCSD always has to proper funds and is not being

shorthanded at times. This part of the meeting reminded me of the section titled School Board

Policies and Rules in chapter one of our literate, School Law for Teachers: Concepts and

Applications. Having read this section, I was able to better understand the process of this

meeting and the discussion of the bills being presented.

Who was Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson and why did his family receive proclamation for

him? Thompson was a well-respected member of the school board and our community. He was a

success coach and advocated for underprivileged students, always supporting that everyone had

potential for excellence and even established a legislation that supports that belief. His family

was read a beautiful proclamation written by the school board regarding his wonderful character

and thanking the family. They family was presented with the proclamation and a book on

education in Las Vegas, as well as took a picture with the school board members.

CCSD Superintendent Jesus Jara discusses the proper avenues for an employee who feels that

they have been wrongfully dismissed to take to have the decision of that dismissal reviewed.
