Method Statement For Pile Hacking Works (Bored Piles at TR4 Project) PDF
1.0 Introduction
The preparation of piles for the next phase of construction involves demolition of excess concrete until the
desired cut-off elevation is reached. The process is often considered cumbersome if not given sufficient early
thought and planning. Despite the influx of new technologies in pile hacking, the traditional method is still
considered to be the most effective and economical approach. With skilled manpower with their sledge
hammers and chisels plus the assistance of heavy equipment such as backhoe or crane as the only
mechanism, pile hacking can be done fast, safe and efficient if proper technique was employed. The objective
of the document is to provide detailed instruction and direction for traditional method of breaking of
concrete piles.

Pile Hacking Operatives
1. Excavate by using backhoe and expose the cut-off level (COL) of pile heads. Ensure the surrounding area
is suitable working condition. Provide scaffolding, dewatering and shoring system if necessary.
2. Survey the exposed pile heads and mark COL using a red spray paint.
3. Chipping will be done manually using sledge hammer and chisel. The objective is to expose firstly the
reinforcement bars by continuous breaking of concrete.
4. After all the steel bars are exposed, chip all loose concrete surrounding all the rebars.
5. If the COL is reached, chip the excess concrete and clean the pile top
6. Remove the excess spirals using oxygen-acetylene torch if necessary
Photos above are actual assembly of reinforcing bars casted in-situ. The objective is to exposed 70cm of
rebars above cut-off level. The rebar congestion (two-layers and bended) on top of pile will make the
chipping of the bored pilee difficult.
All personnel will complete the project site induction before being allowed access to the works. Operator
competency will be recorded and equipment inspections will be undertaken prior to any activity
commencing. Daily start up meetings will be conducted to ensure all safety measures are in place for the
day’s activities.
Scaffold as working platform for working at height shall be erected and certified safe for use
Lighting and forced ventilation if necessary
