Cummins Westport C Gas Plus and L Gas Plus engines can be matched with Allison 4000 Series
Transmissions and TC 521 torque converter for heavy applications that cannot be accommodated with the
smaller Allison 3000 Series models. The 4000 series transmission family was previously designated as the HD
series in US markets. The bus transmission B500 is part of this family. All must use the lightest available,
TC521 converter match when used with C Gas Plus and L Gas Plus gas engines.

Converter Matching

Due to the relatively small margin between the lug up curve of these gas engines and the converter absorption
curve of the TC 521 converter, engine parasitic loads must be limited during converter mode operation.
Excessive parasitic load will result in lowered stall speed and greatly reduced launch performance.

Parasitic load reduction in transit bus applications can be achieved with Freon compressor clutch or pressure
cutout devices that are active in converter mode during vehicle launch.

For refuse and vocational truck applications, hydraulic pump loads must be limited when in converter mode
during vehicle launch. For example, packing functions on a refuse body may not be possible during launch.
Careful review of the hydraulic functions added by the body builder may be required to achieve a suitable final
product. Midrange gas engines may not be able to accommodate added equipment that is designed for larger
diesels with much greater lug up capability.

Overall Gearing Recommendation

For truck applications with these transmissions Cummins recommends overall gearing to achieve a minimum of
45% stall gradeability as determined by Allison SCAAN. The high wheel torque available at vehicle launch
enhances vehicle acceleration. Generally the vehicle should be geared to maximize gradeabilty even if top
speed capability must be limited.

For bus applications SCAAN analysis should be compared against APTA performance guidelines. For transit
bus applications with these transmissions Cummins recommends overall gearing to achieve a minimum of 35%
stall gradeability as determined by Allison SCAAN. Generally the bus should be geared to maximize
gradeabilty even if top speed must be limited.

C Gas Plus and L Gas Plus applications on-highway vehicle applications should be limited to 66000 Lbs
maximum GVW (or GCW for combination vehicles).

Shift Calibrations

The Allison 4000 series transmission is normally limited to a 2300 rpm engine speed. Allison application
engineering has agreed to grant approval for use with the C Gas Plus on a case by case basis.

The 2300 rpm S1 performance shift calibration is recommended for C Gas Plus and L Gas Plus applications.

As with all applications of Allison transmissions, the OEM should seek Allison application approval in addition to
the requirements stated in this Cummins Application Engineering Bulletin. Due to the critical specification
requirements, the 4000 series transmissions require case by case review of the SCAAN analysis results by
Allison engineering before approval for use with C Gas Plus and L Gas Plus engines.
