The C Gas Plus engine is commonly used in vocational truck and commercial bus applications in
place of a similar ISC diesel engine. The C Gas Plus engine has 2400rpm rated speed and often
has lower torque rise when compared to the closest diesel ratings. Thus, special attention to gear
ratio selection and transmission shift point programming is required to maximize vehicle performance.

Best engine performance is achieved at 2200 to 2400 rpm engine speed. Best top gear gradeability
is achieved if the engine operates in this range at the desired top speed.

Automatic transmission shift schedule must be set to initiate full throttle upshifts at engine speeds
above 2300 rpm. This assures best use of the full engine power capability for acceleration.

Overdrive transmission gear ratios that result in engine speeds less than 2000 rpm at highway cruise
speeds are not recommended. Low top gear grade capability and excessive shifting between top
gears will result.

The Cummins recommendation is to select a gearing combination (transmission top gear ratio, drive
axle ratio and tire size) that gives the desired maximum vehicle speed when engine is running at 2200
to 2400 rpm. In addition, the geared vehicle speed, when engine speed is 2400 rpm should not
exceed 70 MPH in the top transmission gear.

The formula for vehicle speed at the 2400 rpm top gear checkpoint is:

2400 rpm checkpoint (MPH) = 2400 * 60 .

transmission ratio * axle ratio * tire revs/mile

This rule can be expressed simply as: the value in denominator of the equation above or
(transmission ratio * axle ratio * tire rev/mile) must be greater than 2060 engine revolutions per mile
in top gear.

Applications that do not follow the Cummins gearing recommendations above must be evaluated by
Cummins Applications Engineering and allowed only by exception.

Truck and Tractor Applications

On-highway applications up to 66,000 GCW/GVW are commonly approved. Higher GVW vehicles for
on/off highway specialty may be approved by Cummins Applications Engineering if the limitations for
top speed and acceleration are well understood and accepted by end user.

For manual transmission applications Cummins VMS analysis can be used to predict performance.
Automatic transmission application must be approved by the transmission supplier using tools such as
Allison SCAAN.

Allison HD 4000/4500 series applications that use TC521 converter should refer to AEB 143.13 for the
special guidelines required with this converter match.

Commercial/ Transit Bus Applications

Standard APTA acceleration performance guidelines are published in the Standard Bus Procurement
Guidelines (sometimes referred to as the white book). These targets are achievable with common 40
foot transit bus specifications and 280 HP engine ratings for buses up to 40000lb GVW.

Lowered vehicle performance can be expected when customer specifications dictate increased
accessory drive loads, increased vehicle weight or higher geared maximum vehicle speed. The
APTA performance tables assume these specifications are at historical levels.

Transmission Overdrive and Axle Ratio Selection

Best acceleration performance is achieved with highest numeric axle ratio that meets customer top
speed requirements. If the predicted or tested acceleration and grade performance does not meet
customer requirements then a higher numeric axle reduction is needed, this may lower the maximum
achievable vehicle speed.

Transmission, axle, propshaft and other supplier’s recommendations must be followed. A

transmission performance analysis to verify shift schedule and converter match is always
recommended for automatic transmissions.

Propshaft speed limitations for overdrive transmissions should be considered, reference Cummins
AEB 140.16. Overdrive ratios less than 0.68 numeric are normally not recommended within the C
Gas Plus gearing guidelines due to the propshaft speed at 2400 engine rpm at top road speed.
Additional limits may be imposed by the axle, transmission, or propshaft suppliers.
