Elements of a Research Problem

Concept: There are 5 elements that can be identified in a given research problem:

1. Aim – the purpose for the problem to be investigated, Answer the question “WHY?”. Why is
there an investigation, inquiry or study?
2. The subject matter or topic to be investigated. Answer the question “WHAT?”. What is to be
investigated
3. The place or locale where the researcher is to be investigated. Answer the question
“Where?’. Where is the study to be conducted?
4. The period or time of the study during which the data are to be gathered. This answer the
question “When?”….When is the study to be carried out?
5. Population or universe from whom the data are to be collected. This answers the question
“Who” or from Whom?”, Who are the respondents? From whom are the data to be
gathered?

Example:
Topic: Oral Communication
Problem Statement: To determine the effectivity of teaching Oral Communication in the
Senior High School of Hinawanan National HS during the school year 2019-2020

Elements of the problem:


Aim: To determine the effectivity of
Subject matter or topic: The teaching of Oral Communication
Period of time: During the school year 2019-2020
Place or locale: The Senior High School of HNHS
Population: the respondents are implied to be either the teachers or the students or
both.

Instruction: Give 2 examples of a topic, state the research problem and identify the elements based on
your research problem statement. Refer to the above example.
