Geography
Australia is one of the 14 independent countries that conform Oceania and is the
sixth largest in the world. Surrounded by the Indian, Antarctic and Pacific Glacial
Oceans, it is separated of Asia by the seas of Arafura and Timor.
A big part of the country is desert or semi-arid. Australia is the driest and flattest
inhabited country, and the one with the least fertile soils. Only in the southeast and
southwest there is a mild climate. The northern part of the country, with a tropical
climate, has vegetation that consists of rain forests, forests, grasslands,
mangroves and deserts. The climate is greatly influenced by seasonal tropical low
pressure systems that produce cyclones in the northern region, and by sea
currents, including the El Niño oceanic-atmospheric phenomenon, which correlates
with periodic droughts.

ECONOMY
Australia has a thriving market economy, with a slightly higher capital income than
the United Kingdom, Germany and France, in terms of purchasing power parity.
The nation ranks second in the Human Development Index conducted in 2015 by
the United Nations, second only to Norway. The Australian economy has not
suffered a recession since the early 1990s. The most important export markets for
Australia include Japan, China, the United States, South Korea and New Zealand.
Demography
Most of the approximately 25 million Australians live concentrated in major cities.
The population of Australia has quadrupled since the end of World War I.
Most Australians live in urban areas; Sydney is the city with the most inhabitants in
Australia. The trend towards urbanization is stronger in Australia than in many
other parts of the world.
Gastronomy
The cuisine of Australia reflects its multicultural historical past: the native cuisine of
the Australian aborigines, called bush tucker or bushfood. Meats and fish are basic
ingredients. The typical Australian dish par excellence is the meatloaf and the
pavlova cake.
Pavlova
This dessert is typical in both Australia and New Zealand and both countries fight
for its origin. His name was chosen in honor of Anna Pávlova, a famous Russian
ballet dancer of the twentieth century.
To make this traditional cake, beat egg whites and add sugar, white vinegar and
vanilla essence. Everything is placed in a baking pan and baked at about 140 ° C
for one hour. Once baked, let it cool and remove from the mold. Then it is
decorated with whipped cream and fruits, although each chef gives it his personal
touch. The result is a crunchy dessert on the outside and creamy on the inside.
