Recent Trends in HRM

 The recent quality management standards ISO 9001 and ISO 9004 of 2000 focus more on
people centric organizations. Organizations now need to prepare themselves in order to
address people centered issues with commitment from the top management with renewed
thrust on HR issues more particularly on training.

 Human resource outsourcing is a new accession that makes a traditional HR department

redundant in an organization. Exult, the international pioneer in HR BPO already roped
in Bank of America, international players BP Amoco & over the years plan to spread
their business to most of the Fortune 500 companies.

 With the increase of global job mobility, recruiting competent people is also increasingly
becoming difficult, especially in India. Therefore by creating an enabling culture,
organizations are also required to work out a retention strategy for the existing skilled
manpower.

The most critical area of problem in this particular case is that after the merger/acquisition of Hot
Jobs service firm with Yahoo, the company is facing the challenge of employees retention.
Employee retention is a business management term referring to efforts by employers to retain
current employees in their workforce. The purpose is to avoid employee turnover and associated
costs: hiring and training expenses, productivity loss, lost customers, diminished business and
damaged morale among remaining members of the workforce.

Hot Job was founded in 1996 that allow clients to create a private job board. Since than this firm
is serving 9,000 businesses and nearly 3 millions job seekers. After the impact of the World
Trade Center tragedy many of the employees including the star senior programmer, Jackson
Doone, were loosing their jobs and were anxious to know about their future and the future of
their team members. The merger of the company with Yahoo will lead to loose their top staff to
the competition.

Rumors about what will happen was spreading fast and the company know that retention of
employee is very crucial at that particular time. Hence, as a HR manager, one of the strategic
goals is to help the company to retain their talented people. This could be done possibly by
offering the employees retention bonus.

Human Resource management is a process of bringing people and organizations together so that
the goals of each other are met. The role of HR manager is shifting from that of a protector and
screener to the role of a planner and a change agent. Personnel directors are the new corporate
heroes. The name of the game today in business is personnel. Nowadays it is not possible to
show a good financial or operating report unless your personnel relations are in order.
Over the years, highly skilled and knowledge based jobs are increasing while low skilled jobs are
decreasing. This calls for future skills mapping through proper HRM activities. Indian
organizations are also witnessing a change in systems, management cultures and philosophy due
to the global alignment of Indian organizations.
