8.0 Maintenance of Laptop Battery

• New battery pack must be fully charged before use.

2. New battery pack needs to be fully charged and discharged (cycled) a few times before it

can condition to full capacity.

3. Rechargeable batteries undergo self-discharging when left unused. Always store a

battery pack in a fully charged stage for storage.

4. Fully drain and fully recharge your battery pack every few month.

5. Turn down the LCD brightness of your portable device.

6. Use built-in power management on your portable device.

7. Turn off LCD or other unnecessary accessories when not in use.

8. Set screen saver blank to 1 to 2 minutes of your notebook.

8.1 Maintenance of the TFT Screen

• Turn off the laptop before cleaning the screen

• Cloth : Only use a 100%-cotton cloth that is soft and absorbent like old T-shirt, sock,
towel. Make sure you’re not using a cotton/polyester blend that contains stiff
filaments which can scratch an LCD’s surface.

• Paper towel or facial tissue : These should never be used because they contain
wood fibers, also hazardous to LCDs, and definitely are not how to clean a laptop
screen.

Also remember to never use a dry cloth on your LCD monitor. Dust particles moved
around with even the softest cloth could create scratches.

• Liquid : The best way to get a really clean laptop screen is to use isopropyl alcohol,
containing 91% pure alcohol, with 9% de-ionized water. It’s perfectly safe for use on
electronic equipment and LCD screens because it evaporates quickly and does not
leave a residue. The lesser strength isopropyl alcohol 70% is used primarily for
massage and muscle pain.

A 1:1 solution of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol 91% can be used to clean a
laptop screen that is not heavily dusty or soiled with greasy fingerprints. Vinegar and
distilled water in a 1:1 solution can also be used for light cleaning.

Certain household liquids should never be used on LCDs. These include ammonia
and tap or mineral water, which leave permanent white spots and streaks. Household
window cleaners should be avoided because they might contain ammonia, or other
harmful chemicals which also can cause irreparable damage.

Another caution is to never spray a solution directly onto an LCD. Always spray the
liquid on a cloth, only enough to moisten it slightly, and then apply to the screen in
gentle, counter-clockwise motions.

• Kits : Some cleaning kits are available in the market. Micro-fiber cloths and anti-
static solutions are packaged together and sold at office supply or electronics stores.
The special solution leaves a slight film that protects a clean laptop screen, repels
dust and smudges, and keeps it clean longer. The liquid should be sprayed onto the
cloth, which only needs to be slightly wet, not dripping, when applied to the screen.
There’s a slight disadvantage to these kits. Certain solutions cause streaking, so it’s
best to do a little research before investing in this method.

• Micro-fibre cloths : can also be purchased separately and used with isopropyl
alcohol 91%, and/or distilled water. Whether using the complete kit or the cloths
alone, make sure the packaging designates the product is ”safe for laptops and LCD
screens.”

• Anti-Static Cloths : Anti-static cloths made specifically for cleaning without liquid of
any kind. These cloths are formulated for advanced optical technology and are
considered the best way to clean, polish and protect a laptop screen. Even greasy
fingerprints can be buffed off using these cloths, readily available at electronics or
office supply stores.

• Similar cloths are made for cleaning camera or eyeglass lenses, and these can be
found at any drugstore, optometrist or camera shop. Anti-static cloths are the
quickest and easiest solution when you want the most advanced and easiest method
to both protect and clean a laptop screen.

• The above options offer a variety of easy and safe ways to care for your LCD
monitor. With simple maintenance on a regular basis, a laptop screen will last for
many years

8.2 Maintenance of the Laptop Keyboard

• In order to keep your keyboard cleaner and prevent keys from sticking or
malfunctioning, do your best to keep food and drink away from where you are
working.
• Even if you don't spill something directly on the laptop keyboard, you will get residue
on your fingers and transfer that to the keyboard.
• Compressed air with Vacuum cleaner can be used on the keyboard to get rid of dirt
build-up.
• Read your User's Manual to learn if the keys can be removed for leaning.
• Just be sure that you put the keys back in their proper place when you are done
cleaning them.
• Cotton swabs are useful for cleaning in and around keys.

13.0: About Linux

13.1 What Linux would mean for you

• Linux is a freely available Operating System. So it is gaining popularity everyday. But

the availability of manpower is limited. So, the scope for manpower having expertise
in Linux is also going up.

• Large number of software including C, Java, Pearl, Open Office are freely available
under Linux. So software knowledge base can be increased using the Linux
operating system using these software

• Linux is based on UNIX. Therefore it is stable Operating System. It is not vulnerable

to virus like Microsoft windows

• Web Servers and Mail Servers are freely available under Linux.

• As the Linux source code is freely available, one can get insight into the operating
system.

13.2 Know more about your GNU/Linux

With your PC, we have provided you a booklet “Getting Started Linux” which contains the
basics of the Linux Operating System that you need to be conversant with while operating
your PC.

13.3 Advantages of GNU/Linux

GNU/Linux is reliable

The Blue Screen of Death doesn't exist in the Linux world. Linux systems, just
like Unix and NetWare, can run for years without failure. Operating system
crashes (called "kernel panics" in Linux) are rare - many Linux users have never
seen a crash. ZDNet's test of Linux vs NT showed that Linux simply does not
fail.

GNU/Linux runs on your existing machines

The efficiency of Linux and most Linux/Unix applications allows you to use nearly any
computer. A typical web server or file server can be a low-end Pentium class PC.
Many graphical applications run with acceptable performance on 150 MHz Pentium
class machines. Linux/Unix Office suites that try to be replacements for Microsoft
Office need faster computers but not as fast as what's needed for Windows. You don't
need to plan on new PC purchases every few years. Machine requirements change
very little with each successive version of Linux. Rather than spending money on new
computers every few years, put the money in the employee profit share plan.

GNU/Linux is free and requires no costly add-ons

You can download Linux from the Internet and install it on as many machines as you
like. The same is true of most application software. You may find it more convienient
to purchase a CD-ROM of a Linux "distribution". Email and newsgroup servers,
remote administration tools, C/C++ compilers, high-end graphics programs, SQL
servers (all costly add-ons for Windows) are included at no charge with Linux
distributions

Support?

Linux is the best supported operating system of all time. The reason is the Internet.
You can get help from tens of thousands of enthusiastic Linux users and
programmers. Support is free - the answers you get come from people who are not
paid to help you. You'll hear about solutions to your problems that include dumping
what you have and replacing it with something better -advice that you don't hear from
vendors of commercial software.

GNU/Linux has no Registry

When Microsoft introduced the Registry in Windows 95, it was applauded as being a
mechanism that brought order to the chaos of the Windows 3.X "ini" files. At the time,
we had no idea that the Registry would be such a handicap and get in the way of
effectively managing networks of Windows machines. The Registry makes managing
a Windows machine complex and difficult and is known to be responsible for some
reliability problems. In retrospect, the "ini" files were not so bad now that we've tasted
the Registry. Linux is managed by simple, plain text, easy to troubleshoot,
configuration files.

You don't need to restart Linux

Some Windows configuration changes require a reboot. Reconfigure a Windows file

server during the day and you impact everyone. This limits system maintenance to off
hours or impacts productivity. Nearly all Linux configuration changes can be done
with the system running, without affecting unrelated services and without having to
reboot. Reconfigure a Linux server and users may not notice.

GNU/Linux has no SIDs

Cloning Windows systems is made more difficult by the SID (System IDentifier) that
must be unique between machines. With Windows XP and its hardware-based
licensing scheme, cloning systems becomes not only very difficult but illegal -
according to Microsoft's licensing terms.

Linux has no need for system identifiers. Each Linux machine is distinguished by its
name and IP address. Both of these are easily modified and require no rebooting.
Cloning Linux systems is dead simple.

GNU/Linux has no licensing mechanism

Upgrading Windows software is more difficult than it should be because of licensing.

The licensing schemes vary but the result is that you have to jump through hoops to
install or upgrade software. Linux and its system programs have no license-
enforcement mechanism. No hoops.

Privacy issues

Every few months or so it seems that there's yet another report of a Microsoft product
that behaves in a way that raises concerns about our privacy. We don't have these
concerns when we use Linux and Open Source software because functions that
would violate our privacy would be detected when the code is scrutinized by an army
of Linux enthusiasts.

The GUI is optional

Windows carries its resource-intensive GUI baggage around at all times. Yet, some
systems, such as web servers and file servers, do not need a GUI and don't benefit
by it. The Linux GUI (X Window) is an optional subsystem that you can choose to use
or not. Additionally, you can start and stop the GUI anytime you like without restarting
the system or impacting any programs already running.

Disk defragmentation

All versions of Windows suffer from the same problem - disk fragmentation
significantly reduces performance. Even Microsoft's latest new versions of Windows
use a file system that has fragmentation problems just like the early-1980s vintage
DOS. A Windows file server must be defragged frequently. The native Linux file
system is designed to fragment very little and defragmentation programs are
unnecessary.

Who's in control?

With the Windows NTFS filesystem, users can easily hide files and whole directories
from the system administrator. The administrator is left wondering about diminishing
free disk space and almost powerless to do anything about it. Users can do this using
normal permissions as well as NTFS streams. In contrast, the Linux system
administrator always has an unobstructed view of the file system and is always in
control.

One size fits all?

Windows is a "one size fits all" operating system. You can use it for workstation or
server applications - one application or
many. The problem is that its size is always extra large and getting substantially
larger with each new release. Keeping code
size small and efficient is not a Microsoft concern given the number of Easter Eggs
that have been discovered in Microsoft
applications.
Linux is small by comparison and has no Easter Eggs. You can easily reconfigure the
Linux operating system to only include
those services needed for your application. This reduces memory requirements, may
improve performance, and generally keeps things simpler.

GNU/Linux is multi-platform
Windows is limited to Intel and Intel-compatible processors and only certain machine
architectures such as PCs. In striking contrast, Linux and other Unix-compatible
operating systems work on a wide variety of processors and machine architectures -
from a Macintosh to a mainframe.

GNU/Linux uses open protocols

Linux uses open protocols exclusively. There are no proprietary vendor protocols that
try to lock you in to certain vendors and products. Monopolies need not exist in the
Linux world.

GNU/Linux integrates with NetWare

Linux machines can access your NetWare file servers. Novell's eDirectory for Linux
makes managing a large network of Linux machines downright simple.

GNU/Linux integrates with Windows networks

A Linux computer can act as a client and/or a server in a Microsoft Windows-based

network. This includes a Windows peer-to-peer network as well as a domain-based
network. A Linux machine can emulate a Windows server and many say that it does a
better job of this than Windows.

GNU/Linux integrates with Macintosh networks

A Linux machine can provide print and file services to Macintosh clients via native
Apple protocols.

GNU/Linux is a good career move

If you spend your time becoming a Windows expert, you're acquiring skills that may
not be useful when you change jobs or when your company replaces Windows with
the next fashionable platform. Memorizing which icons to click on and how to plug
Windows security holes are skills unique to Windows - these are not generic skills. In
sharp contrast, learning Linux or Unix gives you a strong grounding in the underlying
technology that will be useful no matter what products will be fashionable in the
future.

Lots of our desired applications are available in the Ubuntu repositories, and some of
these applications have been contributed by the Ubuntu community.

As you might have noticed, a few applications are redundant, for example there are two CD/DVD burning
applications in my list (Brasero, K3B). If you know which one you like best, you obviously don't need toinstall
the other applications, however if you like choice, then of course you can install both. The same goes for music
players likeAmarok, Banshee, Rhythmbox, XMMS or browsers (Firefox, Opera, Chromium).

The username howtoforge is being used in this tutorial. Please replace it with your own username.

2 Installing The Base System
The installation of the base system is easy as 1-2-3 because the Ubuntu installer doesn't
offer a lot of options to choose from, so you cannot go wrong.

Download the Ubuntu 14.04 desktop edition iso image

from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download, burn it onto a CD, and boot
your computer from it:

Select your language and click on the Install Ubuntu button to start the installation:

On the next screen you see a few requirements for the Ubuntu 14.04 installation (the
system should have at least GB available drive space and should be connected to the
Internet). Please check the Download updates while installing and Install this
third-party software (this will install the software necessary to process Flash, MP3,
and other media files) checkboxes and click on Continue:

Now we come to the partitioning of our hard disk. Usually Erase disk and install
Ubuntu is a good choice, unless you need custom partitions and know what you're
doing. Erase disk and install Ubuntu will create one big / partition for us:

Select the hard drive that you want to use for the Ubuntu installation. Then choose your
time zone:

Change the keyboard layout, if necessary:

Type in your real name, your desired username along with a password, and click
on Continue:

Afterwards, Ubuntu is being installed. This can take a few minutes, so be patient:

After the installation, you will be asked to reboot the system.Click on Restart Now:

At the end of the shutdown process, you are asked to remove the Ubuntu installation CD
from the CD drive. Please do this now and press ENTER.

Your new Ubuntu system starts. Log into the desktop with the username and password
you provided during the installation:

This is how your new Ubuntu Unity desktop looks:

Now the base system is ready to be used.

3 Update The System
Now it's time to check for updates and install them. You can start the Update
Manager by opening the Dash, typing in Update Manager into the search bar and clicking
on the icon:

The Update Manager tells you which updates are available (you can click on
the Check button to refresh the list). Click on Install Updates to install them:

If there are any updates available you can install them by clicking on Install
Updates and entering your password confirm administrative rights. When the update is
complete, click on Close (if a new kernel was amongst the updates, a system restart is
required to make the changes effective. If this is necessary, you will see aRestart
Now button. Click on that button to restart the system.). The system is now up-to-date.

4 Flash Player And Java

If you have checked the Install this third-party software check-box during
installation Flash Player should already be installed on the system but Java has to be
installed manually.

To check this, open Firefox and type about:plugins in the address bar. Firefox will then
list all installed plugins, and it should list the Flash Player (version 11.2 r202) plugins
among them.

We will install Java a few steps below.

5 Inventory Of What We Have So Far

Now let's browse all menus to see which of our needed applications are already installed
(open Dash and click on the second icon at its bottom - The label Installed displays all

Salient Features of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing has several good features. These are:

• One can keep their data (content) like contacts, documents, pictures, music, videos,
application, programs, etc on the cloud safe and secure. In case the machine is lost or
is damaged for any reason, the end user need not worry about the work files he/she
had created over time as these files will be available on the cloud thus making this as
a safe storage for their work files.

• Secondly, the files stored on the cloud can be accessed from any other PC or device
like mobile phones and tablets and from any other place. This means the end user
does not have to carry his/her laptop/ tablet PC with him/her always as the content
stored in the cloud can be accessed anytime from anywhere in the world.

• Thirdly, the end user need not worry about the storage capacity for storing large files
as there is a huge storage on the cloud to cater to thousands of users/ files.

• Fourthly, the end user also need not worry about the application(s) which he/she want
to run/execute on the run as these application(s) shall be available on the cloud
without having to pay extra licensing fees for these application(s)/ software. Most
common application(s) include educational software like scientific calculator,
programming languages, Image/Audio/video processing tools, Encyclopedia, Wikis,
Question/Answer banks and tutorials on any subjects like Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, History, Geography, Economics, Literature, etc. which are easily
accessible on the cloud with powerful search utilities. Applications will also be
pushed to the cloud server from time to time.

• Fifthly, the end user can share his/her information with other users in a safe and
secure manner without having to worry about security and virus infections. End Users
can also browse the Internet simultaneously and download/ upload files from/ to the
Internet and the cloud. The cloud provides a single place where information can be
stored, processed and accessed by all the users.

Using Other Operating Systems on the Laptop

The scheme envisages the use of UBUNTU 14.04 integrated with AMTRON OwnCloud for the end
users with specific importance given to the use of Cloud OS and Free and Open Source Applications.
Hence, the Laptop PCs have been specially integrated with the above two operating systems unlike
other dual boot systems which will provide the end user the capability to use the standalone
UBUNTU (Linux) OS locally on their machines as also use the power of cloud to store and share their
files in a secured environment. If the end user wishes to use any other OS like Windows on the laptop,
this is also possible but the other operating systems will not be covered in warranty under this scheme.
