Ho: There is No statistical significant difference in mean values of samples

Ha: There is a statistical significant difference in mean values of samples
Step 1: Calculate Mean of each sample.
Step 2: Calculate Mean of sample Means = X1+X2+X3+X4/4
X double bar = 9+10+12+13/4
= 11
Step 3: Variance Between Samples = n(Xi – X double bar) ^2

Sum of Squares SS = 5(9-11)^2 + 5(10-11)^2 + 5(12-11)^2 + 5(13-11)^2

= 20 + 5 + 5 + 20
= 50
Step 4: MS Between Samples = SS/ V1
V1= 4-1= 3
MS Between = 50/3
= 16.7
Step 5: SS With in Samples = (X1i- X1 bar)^2 + (X2i- X2 bar)^2
+ (X3i- X3 bar)^2 + (X4i- X4 bar)^2
= (1+1+9++1+4) + (4+1+1+16+36) + (36+0+16+36+16)
+ (0+16+1+9+4)
= 16 + 58 + 104 + 30
= 208
Step 6: MS with in samples = SS With in/V2
V2 = N-K = 20-4 = 16
MS with in samples= 208/16 = 13
Step 7: F Ratio Cal. = MS Between/MS With in
= 16.7/13
= 1.285
Step 8: F Ratio Tab. = 3.24 at alpha = 0.05 and VI= 3, V2=16
Step 9: Compare F Ratio Cal. With F Ration Tab.
F Ratio Cal. < F Ration Tab.
Accept Ho
Decision: There is No statistical significant difference in mean values of samples

QUESTIONS FOR PRACTICE

1. Two researchers adopted different sampling techniques while investigating the
same group of students to find the number of students falling in different
intelligence level. The results are as follows:
No. of students in each level

Researcher Below Average Above Genius Total

Average Average
A 86 60 44 10 200
B 40 33 25 2 100
126 93 69 12 300

Would you say that the sampling techniques adopted by two researchers are
significantly different?
2. In a certain sample of 2000 families, 1400 people read newspaper, out of 1800 large
families, 1236 read newspaper. State whether there is any significantly difference
between reading of newspaper among large and small functions.
3. In a survey of 200 boys of which 75 were intelligent, 40 had educated fathers, while
85 of the unintelligent boys had uneducated fathers. Do these data support the
hypothesis that educated fathers have intelligent boys?
4. From the following data, find out whether inoculation is effective in preventing
tuberculosis.

Attacked Not attacked Total

Inoculated 31 469 500
Not inoculated 185 1315 1500
Total
Digit 0 1 2216 3 4 1784 2000

Frequenc 18 19 23 21 16 25 22 20 21 15
y 5. A
certain
survey shows that out of 50 ordinary shops, 35 are managed by men of which 17 are
in cities. 12 shops in village are run by women. Can be inferred that shops run by
women are relatively more in village than in cities?
6. 200 digits are chosen at random from a set of tables. The frequencies of digits are as
follows.

Find whether the digits were distributed in equal numbers in the tables from which
they were chosen.

7. The theory predicts the proportion of bean in the four groups A, B, C and D should be 9:
3: 3: 1. In an experiment among 1600 beans, the number in the four groups were 882,
313, 287 and 118. Does the experimental results support the theory?

The F – Test
8. Two samples are drawn from Normal Populations. From the following data test whether
the two samples have the same variance at 5% level.

Sample 1 60 75 71 74 76 82 85 87
Sample 2 61 66 67 85 78 63 85 86 88 91
