1. GENERAL

Air-cooled Transformer/Rectifier (T/R) units shall be used to provide impressed current

cathodic protection to the internal surfaces of water storage tanks and other facilities having a
comparatively low protective current demand. Each unit shall be self-protected and all
components mounted within one common enclosure.

2. DESIGN PARAMETERS

The units shall comply with the following general specification.

2.1 AC Input Specification

Input Voltage : 110 or 240 V ± 10% (as per the BOQ)
Phase/frequency : 1 phase/60 Hz ± 5% (or as per the BOQ)
Load break switch : Two position (ON-OFF), gang operated
Protection : Fuses shall be supplied in each phase
Transformer Windings : Double wound, Copper
Cable Entry : From below via a removable gland plate.

2.2 DC Output Specification

a) Voltage Output Range : 2 to 36 V dc (or in accordance with BOQ)
b) Output Current : 10A dc (or in accordance with BOQ)
c) DC Control Method : Manual, on-load, medium-fine selector switches.
d) DC Control : Adjustable in 2 Volt (approximately) steps.
e) Rectifier & Rating : Silicon, bridge connected, 200% oversized.
f) Surge Protection : Rectifier input to be c/w surge protectors.
g) DC Output protection : MCB, 2 pole (Square D make only).
h) DC wire size range : 10 to 50 mm2
i) Termination Lugs : To be supplied for each terminal point.
j) Output Surge Protection: Surge protectors are to be provided across the output
terminals, located to enable easy replacement.
k) Cable Entry : From below via a removable gland plate.
l) Meters : DC meters shall be complete with calibration features.
Terminals shall be provided for independent current
measurement
m) Voltmeter Scale : 0 to 50 Volts (or as per the BOQ)
n) Ammeter Scale : 0 to 15 Amps (or as per the BOQ)

2.3 General Specification

Step-down transformer and rectifier as identified in Sections 2.1 and 2.2 above are to be
installed in a common enclosure which shall comply with the following specification:

a) Cooling Class : Air/Self Cooled

b) Temperature Rise : 55 ºC
c) Construction : Dust tight to IEC44, IP65 rating, padlockable enclosure.
d) Cover : Hinged and gasketed to enclosure.
e) Safety : Assembly shall be tamper proof. An insulated, removable
front panel shall be provided to access internal components.
f) Cable/wire entry : Bottom entry/exit shall be via removable gland plate.
Termination lugs shall be supplied for each conductor core
(this includes ac, dc and all grounding points)

g) Sunshade : Suitable for site assembly. Shade to extend 400mm
(minimum) beyond the equipment outline and provide a free
air space of 250mm (minimum) above the equipment.
h) Grounding : Enclosure and cover grounding points shall be complete with
lugs suitable for 16mm2 stranded copper cable.
i) Hardware : Handles, locks and hinges shall be of stainless steel.
j) Support : Unit shall be fitted with brackets, which fully supports the
equipment, to enable wall, frame or pole mounting.
k) Standards : Each unit shall comply with the applicable criteria outlined in
BS171, BS7671, BS9720, BS9000 and BS EN 60146-1-1/3
(or other equivalent standards as approved by WAHA) as well
as related standards and codes identified therein.
l) Surface finish : All external surfaces, including sunshade, shall be blast
cleaned to ISO8501, grade Sa2.5, Zinc flame sprayed (100 µm
thickness) and polyester powder coated (80 µm minimum
thickness); finish colour light grey.
m) Fuses : Each unit shall be supplied with one complete, spare set of all
fuses, conveniently mounted within the enclosure.
n) Rating Plate : Stainless steel rating plate is to be fixed to the outside of the
unit, stating manufacturer's name, unit serial number, date of
manufacture, design temperature, ac input and dc output
ratings as a minimum.

3. FACTORY TESTS

Each T/R unit shall be subjected to the manufacturer's standard inspection and tests to verify the
function and operability of the equipment. Tests shall include, but not be limited to, the
following:
• Power frequency voltage tests
• Insulation tests
• Performance and functional tests
• Output polarity tests
• Load and no load tests

Supplier shall provide a detailed listing, including reference standards, of proposed testing in his
quotation.

A certified test report shall be submitted to the Purchaser prior to the date of shipment from the
factory.

4. DOCUMENTATION

Supplier shall be responsible for the submission of 3 (three) sets of each of the following
technical documentation :
• Outline Drawings
• Wiring Diagrams
• Test Reports
• Operations and Maintenance Manual, including fault finding instructions and complete
spare parts’ listing.

5. SPARE PARTS

The spare parts shall be identical to those which are supplied in the original T/R unit. Supplier
shall include within his quotation a complete priced listing of all necessary spare parts. This
listing should include, but not be limited to, the following minimum components:

• DC breakers
• DC ammeters
• DC voltmeters
• Fuses
• Surge protectors
• Touch up paint, suitable for repair of scratches etc.
