BIOLOGY - CHAPTER 3 - OUR ENVIRONMENT

1. Why are some substances biodegradable and some non-biodegradable?
- The main reason for a substance being biodegradable is being organic that can be
used up by scavengers of the environment. On the other hand, some substances are
non-biodegradable because they are synthetic and cannot be decomposed by the
microorganism.

 2. Give any two ways in which biodegradable substances would affect the
environment.
- They may produce foul smell during decomposition process. They may produce some
harmful gases such as ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, etc., which can further-
cause global warming

3. Give any two ways in which non-biodegradable substances would affect the
environment.
- Non-biodegradable substances affect the environment in the following ways: → They
contaminate soil and water resources as they cannot be decomposed by micro-
organisms. → These substances, when accidentally eaten by stray animals, can harm
them and can even cause their death

4. What will happen if we kill all the organisms in one trophic level?
- If we kill all the organisms in one trophic level, then transfer of energy as well as
matter to next higher level will stop. It will lead to over- population at one particular
level causing amongst the individuals. This would seriously disturb the food chain and
can cause the collapse of an ecosystem even.

5. If all the waste we generate is biodegradable, will this have no impact on the
environment?
- If all the waste we generate is biodegradable, this would also have an impact on the
environment but most of the impacts would be positive.
