As a scientifically curious yet artistic person, my path towards the discovery of


the importance of architecture wasn’t a direct one. After taking part in a Summer
Scholar Program in 2009, I found that engineering wasn’t a career I wanted to
pursue. One of my colleagues during that experience kept referring to me as “ar-
chitect” when we worked together. Indeed I did hold the reins of the projects we
participated in, and having become intrigued by the way engineers saw architects
as their creative counterparts I decided to explore architecture at University
of Miami. I have never looked back since.

Having grown up in Italy and graduated from the Liceo Ginnasio Statale “Ugo Fos-
colo” I developed a passion for the arts and classical literature. I have trav-
eled Europe, the United States and other parts of the world, and not only have I
acquired an eclectic taste, but I have witnessed how deeply the built environment
affects people in varying cities. In my travels I have learned how the least
effective projects are those that force users to adapt to them, and the most ef-
fective ones are those that embellish and enhance everyday life seamlessly.

As I deepened my understanding of the architectural profession, I became fasci-


nated with the concept of the Vitruvian architect of the Renaissance, and have
made it my goal to deeply understand and involve myself in all aspects of project
delivery: design, investment, construction.

Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM) schools are tuition-free public charter
schools dedicated to the placement of students grades 6th through 12th into the
best-ranked colleges and universities with an emphasis on sports curricula. They
are amongst CIVICA’s most dedicated clients and, following our work on a 9 floor,
two-building urban school in Miami, returned to us for the design of a more sub-
urban project in Tampa.

This school features 30 classrooms accommodating 984 students, as well as a lunch


hall and offices for associated staff. Its structural framework employs tilt-up
pre-cast panels which allowed the construction to proceed as quickly as possible
to meet stringent academic deadlines for the opening of the school.
The Principal of CIVICA, Rolando Llanes, also favors this construction system
because it results in clean, stucco-free edges. Under the supervision of Mr.
Guillen, I oversaw the production of the entire construction set, from schematic
design to permitting, including: code research, fire safety plans, floor plans,
elevations, sections, details, coordination of work with engineers, and necessary
permit revisions. Afterwards, I responded to contractor RFIs and submittals, and
conducted two site visits for the purpose of quality control. I then documented
any problems into a field report and a final punchlist.

Chabad Chayil is a religious afterschool day-care currently operating in Miami. They have hired CIVICA to
guide the previously upzoned design through and administrative modification and substantial compliance
process. After redesigning the school within the established zoning boudnaries and while maintaining
the approved densities and program, we then proceeded to flesh out the design in up to the construction
documents phase.

This five story building will feature a Shul & library, a multipurpose social hall, two food prep ar-
eas, a roof terrace, 15 classrooms, and other amenities. The building design features a Robert Venturi
interpretation of the Chabad’s fondness of books - a 4-story book-shaped curtain wall system. Several
double-height spaces emphasize the importance of social gatherings in Jewish cultur, and traditional
spaces of religious significance are given a modern and minimalist reinterpretation.

With design input from the client and architect Rolando Llanes, and with the guidance of Sr. Project
Manager Julio Guillen, I produced the full set of drawings, resolved challenging physical constraints
of the densely packed program, and guided the project through revisions. I regularly corresponded with
the entire design team regarding the coordination of their work and responded to the bidding RFIs, main-
taining the set current throughout.

As part of an interior remodeling of the high-rise Security Building in Downtown Miami, the
client retained HEISENBOTTLE ARCHITECTS to evaluate the feasibility and cost of replacing
the existing historic windows with modern, impact-resistant Miami-Dade NOA-compliant windows
while maintaining their exact historic appearance.

With the help of Maria Elena Carvajal I visited the site and meticulously documented every
window, precisely measuring each mullion, muntin and seal. Then, with the help of project man-
ager Boukman Mangonez, we selected the products that best fit the historical profile of the
windows. I then modeled each window in RevIt.

To help with the expansion of her historic home, the client retained RJ HEISENBOTTLE ARCHITECTS to
evaluate the feasibility and cost of adding two wings to the existing house while retaining its his-
toric character.

With the help of Project Manager Boukman Mangonez I visited the site and documented existing design
features, including deorative trims, dimensions of columns and doors, stair treads, etc. This allowed
the design team (Richard Heisenbottle and Juan Alcala) to make discerning choices regarding the style
of the modern additions. Then, with the supervision of Wilson Herrera, I modeled the existing historic
residence in detail and the two wings of the proposed addition.

Situated in the slip between the American Air-


lines Arena and Museum Park, this Intermodal
Center serves as a hub and connector on the na-
tional and urban scale alike. The station can
house buses, pontoon planes and ferries and is
integrated with commercial venues. The arche-
type of the travel hub has always been associat-
ed with the ideas of forwardness, dynamism, and
flight. As such it seemed appropriate to me to
convey said idea with a building that resembled
the form of a stylized bird. The idea of a paper
plane first, and an origami later, spontaneous-
ly arose. The concept for the intermodal is the
form of the origami Bird Base.

as to connect Museum Park with
the American Airlines arena wher-
ever the architectural queues of
these spaces remain unresolved.

The pontoon and boat docks engage


the slip while creating an open
plaza space between themselves
and the urban fabric.

The Southern building serves as a transportation hub where tickets are purchased, luggage is checked and
flights are controlled. On the other hand, the Northern building houses a shop, a restaurant and a club.
Circulation in each building is achieved via staircases and a panoramic elevator. Docks are accessed on
the first floor, while planes are accessed via the second floor ramp on the Northern building.

Miami has an incredibly variegated architec-
tural history: on one hand, the architecture
of the early colonial buildings and of the Med-
iterranean Revival tradition, and on the other
the playful tropical modern architecture. By
integrating wood, the material of tradition,
and concrete, the material of modernity, Miami
Intermodal showcases both of these facets of
its character.

The roof is designed to convey lightness:


concrete Y-columns support a frame of glulam
beams. These beams leave a gap between the
concrete and the wood that makes the concrete
slabs that form the roof appear as if float-
ing. This dynamic roof is visible from nearly
every point of the building.

The project is meant to utilize Miami’s uni-


versally coveted weather by maximizing outdoor
spaces. Generous overhangs provide shade, and
breezes easily make their way through the po-
rous building.

The building thus celebrates both Miami’s


eclectic architecture and the astonishing cli-
mate it enjoys.

As part of the interior design course, stu-
dents were grouped into teams of 2 and assigned
several proposals for the interior remodeling
of several spaces. As part of the assignment,
teams were to prepare mood boards, select
furniture and finishes, establish a budget,
and present their designs to the class.

This particular proposal is for the remodel-


ing of the student lounge into a coffee room.

RENDERING
This proposal for an interior remodel of
a kitchen and bar / dining space utilizes
a muted color pallette - this choice was
made so that the chefs that would be us-
ing this space could color the space with
their herbs, spices, and souvenirs from
their travels.

Rather than continuing to imagine the two


rooms as separate spaces, we used the
central island in the kitchen to unify
the spaces, giving the sense of a larger
space.

DESIGN BUILD - COFFEE KIOSK

Each year the School of Architecture at
the University of Miami holds a high-
ly coveted course during which students
design a small scale structure and con-
struct it in just a semester’s time. I
was fortunate enough to participate in
the construction of a much needed coffee
kiosk for the students of the school.
In order to maximize visibility while
maintaining a minimal footprint, the form
of a lantern was explored and abstracted
into a simple, volumetric project fo-
cused on techtonics and skin. During the
day, the open-air structure is shaded,
and during the night the louvers reveal
slithers of light emanating from within.
This project required strong teamwork and
dedication and was an invaluable learn-
ing experience for me as a designer and
professional.
The coffee kiosk is intended to be mov-
able, and has to adapt to two small sites
with considerable obstructions. We took
the challenges head on via numerous char-
rettes, until we came up with a design
that was both functional and beautiful.

A hollow aluminum base is suspend-
ed on casters. The notched floor
joists hang off the base, which
also supports the eight 6x2 col-
umns via welded plates. After in-
stalling the joists and nailers,
we applied waterproofing and bolt-
ed the casters. After planing and
processing the red cedar columns,
we bolted them to the plates on
the aluminum base and proceeded
with applying the wood flooring.
Each column supports an interior
frame, on which the louvered pan-
els, windows and doors are hung.

The corner louvers were extremely challenging given their 45 degree slats, a detail we wanted in order
to give the structure lightness and porosity. The roof floats 8” above the last panel. This, along with
its gentle slope, contributes to the kiosk’s sense of lightness. We used temporary supports to raise
the roof above the 11’-2” columns. The roof is composed of hip rafters adjoined via an octagonal cen-
terpiece from which lighting is suspended. The rafters support skip sheathing on which plastic roofing
is fixed. This allows for a continuation of the kiosk’s glowing skin. The kiosk has three windows which
fold outward and downward. When opened, the beveled sill serves as a counter.

STUDENT: GIULIANO D’ARRIGO
The Design District is a world-renowned destination known for its celebration of art in all its forms:
fashion, interior design, sculpture, painting, culinary. At the center of the Design District is figure
of the artist: as such it is the perfect site for a rentable artist studio and gallery. In 2014, at the
time of this academic project, I found the selected site to be unwalkable and distant from any form of
refreshment, so I researched various examples of oasis-like ecosystems to find inspiration for a place
of respite in the urban fabric. The design follows the form of the Baobab Tree, both in its shape and
function, and gives back to the community by devoting most of the first floor footprint to a semi-public
garden with benches and water fountains.

The first floor is a landscaped park with shading provided by the building’s soaring
overhang. The second floor is the artist’s main work area, with a bathroom, music
room, and accommodation for one guest. The master bedroom and bathroom, kitchen and
living areas are on the third floor.
