Theodore Dreiser
[1A] Theodore Dreiser, the American author best known for the novel Sister Carrie
(1912), introduced a powerful style of writing that had a profound influence on the writers that
followed him, from Steinbeck to Fitzgerald and Hemingway. [1B] It was in Sister Carrie that
Theodore Dreiser created a fictional account that laid bare, the harsh reality of life in the big city
and in which Dreiser established himself as the architect of e new genre. [1C]
Dreiser was born in 1871 into a large family whose fortunes had in the recent past taken a
dramatic turn for the worse. Before Theodore’s birth, his father had built up a successful factory
business only to lose it to a fire. [4A] The family was rather abruptly thrust into poverty, and
Theodore spent his youth moving from place to place in the Midwest as the family tried
desperately to reestablish itself financially. [4B] He left home at the age of sixteen. [4C] After
earning some money, he spent a year at Indiana University but left school and returned to
Chicago, yearning for the glamour and excitement that it offered. [4D] At the age of twenty-two,
he began work as a reporter for a small newspaper in Chicago, the Daily Globe, and later worked
on newspapers in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Saint Louis, and New York City. In his work as a
reporter, he was witness to the seamier side of life and was responsible for recording events taht
befell the less fortunate in the city, the beggars, the alcoholics, the prostitutes, and the working
poor.

Individually, write at least 300 words agree/ disagree essay based on the following
topics:“Do you agree or disagree that taking an online course is less effective than the traditional
or regular class? Give some reasons and examples to support your writing”. Write at least 5
paragraphs covering: introduction, main, and closing parts.
Online course is a class Web-based that taught through the Internet. It means we take the
class with laptop, tablet, or smartphone. In online course it’s not necessary to come to campus
everyday, we can send or upload the assignment anytime as long as we can access the Internet.
Nowadays, so many colleges trying to apply this new education-revolution, but of course not
everyone think that this revolution is a good revolution.
For me, I disagree with the statement. Why? I think online class can help us to reach
more than usual. What’s that mean? For the example, if we take offline-course or traditional
course we have to focus on that class, we can’t take another study, we can’t travel more, we can’t
build a business that take a lot of time. Online course is very helpful, it help students to get
degree or something like that but also give them opportunity to do the other things.
I think, online course not only help student, it helps the lecture too. If they can manage
their time well they can get more salary by teach in some online course because online course is
very flexible. For the example they can teach in traditional course in the morning, after the class
then they can teach in online course. It only takes 1-2 hours and it can be during the travel,
during the rest time, or anytime and everywhere because it’s flexible.
Online course also help us to be more discipline (only if we want to). If we take the
online course and we don’t care about the material itself or we’re not in mood to do the
assignment then we won’t be graduate from that course. In the offline course, the lecturer or the
teacher don’t care about how far you understand the material as long as you’re present in the
class. But, in another case, online course is not recommended for lazy person, in this condition
the students are recommended to take the offline-course.
