Safety Rules for Power Tools

Most of us couldn’t imagine trying to do the jobs we do without power tools. Power tools
make jobs quicker and easier. While you may take the availability of power tools for granted,
don’t take safety for granted. You probably have a long list of things to accomplish today.
Before you start, listen to the following and ask yourself whether you really follow each
piece of advice every time you pick up a tool.

 Know your power tools; read the manuals carefully. Learn their applications,
limitations and hazards.
 Always wear safety glasses. Wear a full face shield, respirator or hearing protection
when required.
 Don’t wear loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in moving parts. Keep long
hair tied back.
 Keep guards I place and in working order. They are there for your protection
 Maintain your power tools. Keep tools sharp and clean for the best and safest
performance.
 Disconnect tools when they are not in use, before servicing, and when changing
blades, bits and cutters.
 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for lubricating tools and changing accessories.
 Avoid starting tools unless they are double insulated. If a tool has a three-pronged
plug, use a three-hole receptacle.
 Remove adjusting keys and wrenches before starting a tool.
 Never carry a tool by the cord or yank the cord to disconnect it.
 Secure your work using clamps or a vise. It’s safer, and it frees both hands to
operate the tool.
 Use the right tool for the job. Don’t force a small tool or attachment to do the job of a
larger one.
 Avoid dangerous environments! Don’t use power tools in damp or wet locations.
Keep your work area well lit.
 When not in use, store tools in a dry, secure place.

Did you find a couple of areas where you can improve? Start forming new habits today!
Working safely should be the first item on your list today and every day.
