PROJECT: FOUR LANING OF HYDERABAD – BANGALORE SECTION FROM KM: 336+000 TO KM: 376+000
OF NH-7 IN THE STATE OF ANDHRA PRADESH PACKAGE – ADB / II C- 13

METHOD STATEMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF

PIPE CULVERT
1.1 General:

This method describes the installation and back filling for NP4 RCC pipes as per drawing and
Technical Specification 2900 from Km 336+000 to Km. 376+000 of NH-7 in the state of Andhra
Pradesh Package :- ADB/II C-13

1.2 Temporary Work:

Road diversion drainage diversion etc. shall be done as per site requirement.

1.3 Surveys:

The surface levels of excavated natural ground shall be checked as per drawing and recorded.
Reference centre line pedestals shall be constructed for alignment of pipes as well as for the
construction of head wall etc.

1.4 Utilities:

Utilities like electric poles, telephone lines, cables etc shall be shifted before laying of pipes.

1.5 Traffic arrangement and control:

i. Temporary signboards will be kept all along the working zone to alert the people.

ii. Flagmen will be engaged to ensure free flow of traffic whenever and wherever required.

1.6 Access:

Access to the work site will be through existing road by providing ramps.

1.7 Work methodology:

1.7.1 Plant and Equipment:

Excavator, Hydra or Tripod with chain pulley, concrete transit mixer of 6 cum capacity, vibrator with
needle, dewatering pump, Generator for lighting purpose etc.

1.7.2 Construction:

1. The foundation bed for pipe culvert shall be excavated true to the lines and grades as shown on
the drawing.
2. The bedding for pipe shall be prepared with PCC M15 grade of concrete as specified in the
drawing.
3. All Pipes shall be tested as per Specification before placing in position .The arrangement for lifting,
loading and unloading concrete pipes from factory and site shall be such that the pipes do not
suffer any undue strain.

4. After checking bed foundation pipes shall be laid with the help of excavator or Hydra or Tripod with
chain pulley etc., in the proper position without damage.

5. Where two or more pipes are to be laid adjacent to each other, the clear distance between two
pipes should be D/2, where “D” is internal diameter of the pipe.

6. The laying of pipes on the prepared foundation shall start from the outlet and proceed towards the
inlet and be completed to the specified lines and grades.

7. Alignment will be done as per the centre line marked on bed matching with the center of pipe, with
the help of manual means and hydraulic jack.

8. Pipes having flush joints shall be used which will form a self-centering joint with a jointing space 13
mm wide. The jointing space shall be filled with cement mortar, 1. Cement to 2. Sand. Care shall
be taken to fill all voids and excess mortar shall be removed. Width of joint should be 150mm to
200mm and thickness of joint should be 20mm.

9. All joints shall be made with care so that their interior surface is smooth and consistent with the
interior surface of the pipes. After finishing the joint shall be kept covered and damp for at least
seven days.

10. Head wall, apron and other ancillary works shall be constructed in according with details shown in
the drawings.

11. Back filling shall be done on either side of the pipes and up to 150 mm above the top level of pipe
using sand. The backfill material up to 300 mm above the top of pipe shall be done through
ramming or tamping in layers not exceeding 150 mm. After that usual Embankment material shall
start.

12. Filling of the trench shall be carried out simultaneously on both sides of the pipe in such a manner
that no unequal pressure is developed.

1.8 Inspection and Testing:

1. Level checking for foundation of pipe shall be done before laying.

2. All other testing of backfill material shall be done as per section 900 of technical specification.

1.9 Safety:

1. Safety hazards will be identified both at site as well as at factory.

2. All the workers and staff will be briefed about the dangerous hazards.

3. The arrangement for lifting, loading, unloading and laying of pipes shall be done keeping in view
the safety of men and machineries to avoid causing any unforeseen incident.

4. The excavation, laying of pipes and back filling will be done in sequence and as per construction
procedure.
1.10 Environmental: Stagnant water (if any) at the excavated trench shall be de-watered completely
prior to start of any further activity at site and further stagnation of water will be avoided.
