Platinum Social Sciences - Geography - Grade 4 Term 1-Places Where People Live
Local History
A place where a group of people live is called a settlement, like farms, villages, towns and cities.
Unit: 3 – Roads and footpaths – how they are used within settlements
People use roads to travel from one place to another – some roads are big, while some are small.
Busy roads are usually made of tar, while quieter roads may be made of gravel and sand.
Gravel roads are called dirt roads.
Each settlement has its own special features which are either natural (like rivers, forests, or big
rocks), or human made (like buildings, bridges and roads).
Features that stand out in a place are called landmarks.
When you explain to someone how to get from one place to another, you must:
o Know how to get there yourself.
o Think of all the landmarks you see along the way.
o Remember the names of the roads you travel along.
o Make sure you know where to turn left, right, or go straight.
What all people need: water, food, shelter, health care, energy
People need water, food, shelter, health care and energy to stay alive (needs)
We need clothes to keep us warm, and energy to cook our food and boil water
We also need energy to give us light at night
