EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan

Learn about the atmosphere, air, plants and fruits

Allison Nunnally
Second grade/Science/Nature

Common Core Standards:

The nutritive value of foods, including natural and organically produced foods, the relation of nutrition to
health, and the use and effects of food additives;

Topic: The Atmosphere - focuses on air and water as they relate to weather and weather changes that can be
observed and measured.

Topic: Interactions within Habitats

Topic: The atmosphere is primarily made up of air.

Topic: Water is present in the atmosphere.

Topic: Fruits and vegetables we eat and where they are grown

Topic: Living things cause changes on Earth.

Lesson Summary:

Observation of the environment outside and the world around us and what we eat that is grown from the
ground.

Estimated Duration:

Lesson will be 115 minutes long –they will be 2 - 30-minute lessons and one 45-minute lesson will take
place outside.

Commentary: I want to bring the children outside into the sunshine and to look around at the beautiful sky
and trees and plants and flowers. To understand that air is all around us and that we need water to make all
the beauty around us live. To introduce some fruits that grow from plants.
Instructional Procedures:

Day 1: 45 minutes
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- I will tell the students what we are going to learn. Starting with
going outside into nature to see the sky, the trees, the plants and the flowers. Students will get to go outside
and we will briefly walk around in the outdoors.
20 minutes: I will tell them about what is around us and they can look around and ask questions.
15 minutes: We will come back inside and talk about the different kinds of trees that provide us with foods
we eat such as apples, peaches and cherries.

Day 2: 30 minutes
15 minutes: We will get to look at the fruits from trees and have a tasting lesson. We will talk about colors
and flavors of the fruits we eat. We will save the seeds and plant them outside.
15 minutes: Picking out seeds by type and putting them in groups to plant the next day.

Day 3: 30 minutes
5 minutes: A brief review from yesterday of the fruits we ate and what we liked the best and if we asked our
parents to get us fruit to eat at home.
25 minutes: Back outside to plant the seeds in a space outside and mark where we planted what seeds. So,
we can come back at a later date and see how our plants are doing. If they sprouted or grew at all.

Pre-Assessment:
We will begin by talking about the air and water and how it is so important in every aspect of living species
on Earth. We can talk about the oceans and if anyone in class has ever been to the ocean and who has trees
in their backyard or if they like to be outside under the big blue sky.

Scoring Guidelines:
So far, I have learned that as a teacher we do not want to call on students who do not want to speak.
If a student does not wish to speak then they do not have to. I want to have a very interactive
classroom and hope everyone can feel they can speak when they want to. There will be grade for this
part. We will just begin by talking about the air and water and then move onto plants and fruit trees.
Post-Assessment:
The post assessment will be that they all tasted and fruits and helped to plant the seeds in the earth. I hope to
teach that it is very important for everyone to care about the plant and keep it clean so we will have clean air,
water and plants.

Scoring Guidelines:
Everyone can talk about their favorite fruit that comes from a plant and if they know of others they
like to eat, they like they can talk about other types or other fruits they want to try or plant at another
time. I would like to discuss bananas and they are grown on trees but they are only grown in warmer
climates.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: Maybe I have a student who has a big garden at home and plants seeds and eats food from their
yard already. We can expand the lesson to vegetables or other types of plants we can grow at home. Herbs
could be another option. Personally, I love plants and hope to have many plants in my classroom so students
can see how something grows and we can eat things we grow too!

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: There are always books on subjects that can be used to learn. I also hope to have a huge library in
my classroom that students can use as a source of learning. If students wanted to take seeds home to plant,
they could also do that too.

Homework Options and Home Connections

I kind of already touched on this but I think it would be good for students to plant a seed or two at home. I
could provide the seeds if needed and all you need is some dirt and a cup if you are going to grow something
inside to start. Squash is another great example of an easy vegetable you can grow in Ohio.
I would ask that my students talk to their parents about any edible foods they have planted at home that the
children might not be aware of and see if they children would like to be a part of taking care of the plants.

Interdisciplinary Connections
I want to bring in vegetables with the fruits. We can have a vegetable day and see what vegetables the
children eat at home and which ones they like the best. I thought it would be better to start with fruits since
vegetables usually aren’t kids favorite foods.

Materials and Resources:

For teachers I will need fruits, knives, cutting boards and access to nature. And a computer.

For students Students will use what I have provided and computers and books will be helpful so
they can look up things for themselves. If as student at home has an iPad, they can use
that to look up plants on their own.

Additional Notes

I hope this will be fun and interactive for the children and they can all get their hands dirty and learn how
wonderful it is to grow your own food!
