Class VIII

Subject: Mathematics B (Section B)

Topic: Mean, median, mode and pie chart
1. The heights, in cm, of 10 boys are given below

117, 108, 122, 117, 108, 120, 118, 117, 123, 124
(a) Calculate the mean height. (b) Write down the modal height. (c) Calculate the median height.

2 A pupil waits at a bus stop each day for the school bus.
Here are the number of minutes the pupil waited each day for eleven days

6 5 11 9 4 8 5 14 6 5 4
(a) Write down the mode. (b) Find the median. (c) Work out the mean.

3. Here are the marks scored by 14 children in a test, 1, 3, 2, 1, 8, 9, 7, 6, 6, 4, 3, 4, 6, 7

For the above set of numbers write down (a) the median, (b) the mode.

4. The table shows the ages of the owners of a new model of mobile phone.

Age Frequency Mid-point of interval Frequency × mid-point

10 ≤ age < 20 6
20 ≤ age < 30 8
30 ≤ age < 40 5

6. Bob has a box of toy bricks.
He counts the numbers of red, yellow, green, black and white bricks in the box.
Here are his results
Red 350 Yellow 236 Green 154
Black 63 White 197
Bob is going to draw a pie chart for his results.
Calculate the size, in degrees, of the angle of the sector for red bricks.

A company has 180 cars to sell. The colours of the cars are red, yellow, green, blue and
black. The pie chart shows information about the number of cars of each colour. The angle
of the sector for yellow cars is 50° and the angle for green cars is 90°. There are as many
yellow cars as there are black cars and the total number of black and blue cars is the same
as the number of green cars.
(a) Write down the angle, in degrees, of the sector for
(ii) blue cars, (iii) red cars.
(b) Calculate the number of black cars.

8. A pie chart is to be drawn for the surface areas, in 1000 km2, of the five Great Lakes in
North America. Here is an incomplete table for this information. Complete the table.
