GEK-87940F 5GY19 Blower Unit Maintenance and Overhaul

SCOPE
This publication covers lubrication, inspection and maintenance procedures for 5GY19 Blowers (Figure 1) while
mounted on the vehicle. Also covered are disassembly, basic overhaul, reassembly, installation and testing procedures in a
repair shop.
Refer to the MODEL DIFFERENCES section for a comparison of various models covered in this instruction.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 5GY19A5 blower unit (Figure 1) is a DC motor with two fans, one at each end of the armature shaft, which supplies
cooling air to retarding grids on off-highway trucks during dynamic retarding operations.

Each fan blade is partially enclosed by an extension of the framehead, which also contains air guide blades and mount-

it on
ing feet for the blower assembly.

The blower directs cooling air in opposing directions, axially to the motor shaft, and away from the blower at each end.
a
rm
The fans of the blower are rotated by a DC powered, four-pole, series-wound motor with commutating poles. The motor

fo
is connected across a resistor in the vehicle’s dynamic retarding circuit, and powered by the voltage developed across that

lI n
resistor when motorized wheel current flows during retarding. Since current and voltage vary with vehicle speed and re-

ia
tarding effort, blower speed will fluctuate in direct proportion.

Clean the outside of the motor and remove the inspection covers. Use clean, dry compressed air and blow the dirt and
carbon dust from the interior of the motor. Assure all air passages through the motor are open.

Wipe off accumulated oil or grease inside the motor with a cloth saturated with a non-oily cleaner.

BRUSH HOLDERS
WARNING: Cleaning agents may be toxic and/or flammable. They can cause serious or fatal injury if used without
proper precautions. For safety:
1. Do not inhale fumes.
2. Use only in adequately ventilated areas.
3. Avoid contact of cleaning agent with the skin.
4. Do not expose cleaning agent to flame or sparks.
5. Observe caution statements issued by the manufacturer of the cleaning agent.
Remove dirt from the brush holder-stud insulators (Item 2, Figure 2) by wiping with a clean, lintless cloth. If necessary,
saturate the cloth with a non-caustic cleaning compound to remove dirt.

5
GEK-87940F 5GY19 Blower Unit Maintenance and Overhaul

Inspect the brush holders for possible mechanical damage from burning or arcing. Look for damaged pressure springs
or levers. Replace parts as necessary. Inspect leads and connections. Ensure the connections are tight. Examine stud insu-
lators for cracks or other evidence of failure.

BRUSHES
WARNING: To avoid possible electric shock or injury from rotating equipment, do not remove or replace brushes
while equipment is energized or rotating.
Inspect brushes for wear, chipping and broken or frayed shunts. Chipped brushes may indicate the commutator needs
resurfacing.
CAUTION: When replacing brushes, use the GE recommended grade. Mixing brush grades in the same motor or
changing brushes to another grade is not recommended, as this could seriously affect commutation, surface film,

it on
commutator and brush life.
NOTE: Brushes must be of sufficient length to last until the next inspection.

a
rm
If brushes are worn to, or near, the minimum length listed in the DATA section, install a new set of brushes. Changing all

fo
brushes at same time is recommended since longer brushes may have higher resistance than others and will not carry their

n
proper share of the current.

BRUSH PRESSURE
ia lI
t
en
Maintain proper brush pressure. Unequal brush pressures cause unequal current distribution in the brushes. Refer to

id
the DATA section for the correct pressure range. Refer to Figure 3 for the method of measuring brush-spring pressure. Read

n f
the spring balance when the pressure between the brush lever and a new brush is reduced sufficiently to free a strip of

o
paper previously inserted between the brush lever and the brush.

Figure r

E P
G
Carefully fit new brushes to the commutator by sanding. Use coarse sandpaper followed by a fine grade sandpaper.
Always sand brushes in the direction of armature rotation.

To seat an entire set of new brushes, refer to Figure 3-A. Cut the sandpaper to the width of the commutator, and long
enough to wrap around the commutator one and one-quarter turns. Insert the end of the sandpaper in a commutator slot,
and wrap the paper in the direction opposite to armature rotation so that the paper will be held by the brushes as the arma-
ture is hand-rotated.

To fit individual brushes, refer Figure 3-B.

Move the brushes up and down in their carbonways to ensure they move freely and do not bind.

BRUSH HOLDER CLEARANCE

Maintain a 0.06-0.09 in. (1.5-2.3 mm) clearance between the brush holders and the commutator. Keep the brush holders
bolted rigidly.

COMMUTATOR

Inspect the commutator for possible burns, flat spots or mechanical damage. The commutator should be clean, smooth
and free from high mica, high bars, flat spots or rough surfaces. The commutator should have a polished or glossy surface.

If there are indications that the commutator is out-of-round, i.e., if the ridge between the brush paths varies in width,
check commutator runout with a dial indicator. Maximum runout is listed in the DATA section.

NOTE: If the commutator is out-of-round, the armature must be removed and the commutator turned and polished
in a lathe or machine ground to restore concentricity. Before turning or grinding the commutator, check the
runout (TIR) between the shaft centers and the bearing fits with a dial indicator. The limit is 0.001 in. (0.03 mm) TIR. If
necessary, scrape the shaft centers to maintain this limit prior to turning or grinding the commutator.

STRING BAND
io n
Clean the string band with a clean cloth dipped sparingly in isopropyl alcohol. Inspect the band a t
for possible damage and ensure the band is tight on the commutator cap. If the surface ofm
r the band is flaked or
cracked, clean the band and apply a coat of GE-1201A (A15B17A) red enamel.

If the unit is not used for six months, disassemble, clean and repack the bearings.

BOLTS
The threads and washer faces of bolts and nuts should be lubricated to obtain maximum clamping force (at the nominal
or at a recommended torque value) when bolts and nuts are installed at reassembly. Lubricate all bolts except brush holder
clamp bolts.

Use a high-pressure lubricant such as graphite in oil (1 part graphite to 5 parts machine oil, by volume), or Lubriplate*
(Part 147X1614), Molykote** (Part 147X1143), Dag*** (Part 147X1613) or anti-seize compound (Part 147X1640) to lubricate
the bolts.

3. Install bearing puller (Figure 4-C) with the pressure cap over the end of the shaft, and pull the bearing, housing and
flinger (2) off the shaft. The shaft sleeve remains on the shaft. It is not necessary to remove it unless it is damaged or a
new shaft is to be installed.
4. To remove the bearing from the bearing housing, place the housing upside-down on parallel blocks. Place a wood-
en block through the housing bore against the flinger (2) and tap on the block with a mallet.

The wooden block should be wide enough to rest on both sides of the flinger, to avoid cocking the bearing as it is
removed.

2. Blow the carbon deposits off of the brush holder body, and clean by any method previously described.

NOTE: If the brush holder is steam cleaned, it should be baked dry at 110 _C (230 _F) for three hours.
CAUTION: Do not point the nozzle of a steam cleaner directly on the Teflon insulators.

Commutator In-Service Maintenance

Out-of-round commutators present an undulating surface to the brushes. In the presence of sudden surface changes
due to high rotation speed or abrupt surface changes, the brushes cannot maintain contact with the commutator. Spark-

it on
ing will occur and the commutator surface will be electrically eroded. If the surface changes are severe, as is the case when
the commutator is considerably out-of-round or has low/high spots, the electrical erosion will rapidly deepen the low spots,
leading to reduced brush life, breaking of brushes and possible flashover. a

The amount of out-of-roundness that can be tolerated depends on the speed and duty cycle

If it is deemed necessaryE to turn the commutator to restore TIR limits, perform the following:

NOTE: Before turning the commutator in a lathe, check the runout (TIR) between the shaft centers and the bearing
fits with a dial indicator. The limit is 0.001 in. (0.03 mm) TIR. If necessary, scrape the shaft centers to restore this
limit prior to machining the commutator.

1. Cover the armature windings to keep out chips.

2. Set the cutting tool for machining copper and set the speed to give a commutator-surface speed of 300 feet per
minute (91 meters per minute).

3. Make light, smooth cuts to remove just enough copper to provide a concentric surface. Avoid tool chatter and over-
heating.

4. Undercut the mica between segments and rake the slots.

1. Connect the motor to a source of power and run it as a series motor. Sand the brushes and make the following tests.
It requires about 365 volts, 216 amperes to obtain 3600 rpm, with no restriction of air flow.

2. Run the blower for five minutes at 1000 rpm. Listen for unusual noises, vibration, etc., then increase blower speed
slowly to 3600 rpm for tests in Steps 3, 4 and 5.

3. Check the vibration of the motor, in all three axes, while running the motor up to top speed. If the vibration exceeds
0.002 in. (0,05 mm), locate and correct the trouble. The armature may require rebalancing.

4. Listen for noisy bearings, preferably with a listening rod.

5. Check the commutator for roughness and assure that the brushes are riding properly.

6. It is acceptable to set the motor on the circular frame head.

7. A pre-installation check should be done to verify the minimum radial tip clearance of 0.025 in. (0.64 mm) between
the fan and the shroud. This verification measurement should be made at a minimum of four locations on each fan.
