LAB REPORT 2

ARENA Simulation
Task 1

Simulation
.
• Simulation is used to study the operation of actual system with time.
• It consists of virtual history of the system that helpful to draw conclusions
related to the characteristics of the actual system.
It is used to
• analyze the performance of a system
• Test what-if queries
• Help full in the design of actual systems
• Both actual and theoretical systems can be modeled
• To analysis the performance of different service sector organization like
education sector, school, video games and testing different scenarios in
existing system

TASK 2&3

ARENA MODEL
The Airport system demonstrated in ARENA Simulation software. Figure 1 depicts the model of
the airport, that comprising of these main parts:
1. Passengers Arrival
2. Passengers Transportation
3. Passengers Processing
4. Passengers Departure

Figure 1 arrival of passengers

Figure 2 Processing on passengers

Passenger Arrivals

The airport system includes the arrival section of passengers. The segment is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3 Passengers Arrival

The passenger’s objects are formed in the Create module and its dialog box is showed in Figure
2. The passenger per Entrance field specifies that Passengers arrival, and the Time Between
Arrivals section identifies passenger’s inter-arrival times that is exponentially distributed with
mean 1.3 minutes.

Figure 4 Arrival of entities next go to the Assign module and it is called Assign Passenger Type
and Sequence and its dialog box is showed in Figure 3. A type of entity assigned by sampling it
from a discrete distribution and specifies that type attribute by codes as (1,2 or 3) using Type
attribute. Furthermore, Attribute Entity. Sequence is given the value of the Type attribute. This
attribute work as an index that links a Passenger type with respect to the operations sequence.

Figure 5 Assign values of each passenger

The operations sequence of the Passenger types are identified by using the Sequence module.
Three sequences (row entries) are well-defined here, one for each Passenger type.

Processing on the passenger by the Airport staff

This segment shows the actual processing on passengers by stuff. This segment comprises sets of
Processing modules and each modeling an operation in the sequence, from ticket pick up Counter
to X rays area. As all processing module have the same structure (except for names), only the
Counter station logic is explained here.

In given task, it goes to the Process module and it is called Counter station whose dialog box is
displayed in Figure 4. The Seize Delay Release selection in the Action field is used to model type
delays at this process. Resource seized is Counter station and processing time is reserved in the
station and its attribute recognized in the Sequence module of Figure 4. Moreover, resource
Counter has to acknowledged as having a capacity of 1 in the spreadsheet view of Resource
module. The capacity of other processing module is similarly stated. Figure 4 shows it.

SIMULATION OF THE MODEL

The ARENA model of the airport was simulated for 1920 minutes. Parameters like Replication
Length and Hours Per Day etc. are given in Run Setup. The Figure shows it. During simulation,
we can observe the movement of passengers by using different animations. After completion of
the simulation, report will be created automatically. From the generated report, we can see the
passenger delays at processes locations and utilizations etc.

Task 4
Results and analysis
The output report is showed in Figure 8. It shows that time per passenger section lists the
statistics of passengers waiting times for each process. As expected, the average waiting time at
the Ticket counter is very large with respect to the other operation locations, since service time
are longer. The results are displayed in graphical forms in Figure

Task 5
IMPROVING THE SYSTEM
By observing the system, I suggest two different approaches to improve the current

system.

IST SUGGESTION FOR IMPROVEMENT

In Figure 7, its shows that ticket counter is consuming more waiting time with respect to the other
stations. In order to decrease the waiting time, we modify the current model by increasing the
number of resources at counter station from 1 to 10. The effect of this new model on delays is
shown in the simulation results of Figure. Obviously, the addition of resources, significantly
reduced the delay at the ticket shop because quickening an process increases congestion
downstream. Ultimately, the number of output passenger increase from 63 to 65.

2nd SUGGESTION FOR IMPROVEMENT

In order to reduce the waiting time, we modify the model by finishing the delay between x ray
areas and Luger counter. The effect of this new model on delays is showed in the simulation
results of Figure 7. Obviously, adding of a station has considerably reduced the delay at the ticket
shop because rushing an operation increases congestion downstream. And number of output
increases up to 77.

CONCLUSION

The improvement of the international airport system is very important in order to improve the
economy of country and to win good impression of foreigner. In this project, the current airport
system modeled in the ARENA simulation software and analysis the delays at each station. It has
been observing that delays at ticket counter is more as compare to the other station. So, the author
suggests to increase the counter man from 1 to 2 in order to increase the output of passenger from

63 to 77. Furthermore, the optimization of the airport staff also need to improve by Scheduling
the staff.
