Interviewer: What are your preparations before, during and after the contest in order to
win?

pabasahon ug newspaper orally. Base sa ilang binasahan anha ko
magkuha kong kinsay mahimong news anchors ug field reporters. Kung
kinsa toy naay computer sa ila, mao toy i-assign naho mahimong writers
for general and individual script ug spinner. Mo-assign pud ko nila kung
kinsa tong mahimo ug talents sa infomercial. Kinahanglan jud no naay
sila ug broadcast nga 5 minutes ra ang time, kinahanglan nga naa jud
pud mas makahibaw sila ug unsaon pagsuwat ug news, aho sila tagaan ug
newspaper nga appropriate sa 5-minute radio broadcast. Aho pud sila i-
international news, sports news ug entertainment news. Magsige jud ug
practice, hasta pud lage weekends magamit pajud sa pag-praktis. Ang
napile pud nga mahimong student broadcasters ma’am gepa-attend pud
ug training sa campus journalism sa district.During na ta ma’am.) Before
the contest, I would scout for grades 4 and 5 pupils from Tomas Oppus
Central School with potentials in scriptwriting and broadcasting to be
prospective members of my team at Rizal Elementary School. The
moment I completed forming the team, I get them to read a sample news
report and from there I’ll choose who will best represent the roles of news
anchors and field reporters. Those with computer are assigned to be
writers for individual script and spinner. I also assign those who can
deliver best infomercial. I always ensure that drills and practices about
newswriting using laptop are carried so they will be used to it during the
contest proper. And for them to master the production of a 5-minute
broadcast package, I always immerse them into rigid training and practice,
and timed simulation and from there I always do immediate correction
especially on pronunciation which is one of the most important aspect in
broadcasting, right ma’am? So that the pupils will be equipped with the
73

right newswriting skills, I show them newspaper articles which are fit for a
5-minute radio broadcast. I also orient them the part of a newspaper where
they could read the different types of news—namely local, national, and
international, sports, and entertainment news. We always conduct regular
practices even during weekend. Plus, my pupils who are shortlisted for
broadcasting roles are made to attend district training and seminars on
campus journalism.

(Sa during sa contest, I gave them reminders kung unsay buhaton nila
makig-istorya sa tapad ug wala nay mogamit ug gadget.)During the
contest, I usually give them reminders on what to do with emphasis on
listening what the guest speaker has delivered in his/her speech because
it’s usually from that speech where topic for local news is taken. I also
remind them to take their personal necessities right before the contest
starts, and have them focused on their goal. I strictly implement no use of
gadgets.

(After the contest pud, kung unsay gehimo naho before sa contest mao
gehapon aho gebuhat after sa contest nga tagaan sila ug newspaper ug
maghimo ug news ug nay time nga na lamang sila naho ug headlines unja
ila himoan ug news.
speaker.)After the contest, what I did during the preparations are still
observed. This is in preparation for the higher level of competition. I
provide them with newspaper and have them write news articles.
Sometime, I provide them with headlines and from there they are told to
develop their story. The more we intensify our practices through
simulations. Simulation includes writing the entire broadcast script,
individual news script, and the infomercial script which they are to
accomplish in a two-hour time. They would now broadcast their script
using a microphone and a speaker to make more realistic.

Pabor naho

Usa
pud sa ahong preparation before the contest kay nag-assign ko kinsay
angajan mahimong news anchors, field reporters, writers for general and
individual script ug talents for infomercial. Unja magsige ug practice
ubos sa 4 minutes and 50 seconds o 5 minutes and 10 seconds.) Before the
contest, ma’am, I always ensure that I know the capability of the pupils
who will join our broadcasting team—those with journalistic skills
especially. It worked to my advantage because I am the English teacher
for pupils from grades 4-6. It is a lot better if you scout from grade 4
pupils with potentials and start their training at least one year before they
represent the school. I really have to immerse the kids in typing exercises
especially they will only be given two hours to come up with their
broadcast script during the contest. They need to work on their typing
speed. It was also nice and timely that we had a district-based workshop
on journalism which I sent my pupils to attend. Another thing, before the
contest I made it sure that every role is properly sorted out. Then, we
always conduct practices especially in coming up with a 5-minute
broadcast package. We had to keep on practicing the timing because there
is no room for undertime nor overtime in broadcasting.

Kinahanglan tagaan sila tanan
During the contest, I always remind my pupils to
concentrate and focus their minds especially during the opening
ceremony. They have to listen attentively to every word shared by the
speaker much more if there is a press conference because usually topics
assigned for local news are taken from there. I make it sure that I provide
all the materials needed like printer ink, laptop battery and charger, and
an extension wire for their practice.

(After the contest, rigid na amo training kay sige nami ug simulation
Maghimo pud sila ug general script.
After na makahimo na sila ila nang iprint unja prepare dajon para i-
broadcast. Weekends gamiton namo para pagpractice.)After the contest,
we had rigid trainings and simulations. We have to be realistic in our
simulation and be strict in timing our 5-minute newscast. Aside from
75

writing individual news scripts, they are also tuned to write the entire
broadcast script including the infomercial part. These practices could not
be perfectly accommodated on weekdays, hence we need to spend our
weekends for our training.

School,

ngare sa ahong classroom. Ang mga bata nga interesado mo-apil ahong
pasuwaton ug news unj ila i-deliver. Kung makompleto na ag ahong team,
aho silang pabasahon ug utro ug news unja ahong paminawn kung kinsa
tong angajan mahimong news anchors, field reporters, writers for general
and individual script ug spinner.
journalism ang mga bata so naan a silay idea unsaon.) Before the contest,
I do screening here in Nahulid Elementary School. I do it inside my
classroom. The children who are interested to join the team would be
asked to write a simple news article and tell them to deliver or report what
they have written. Those children eyed with potentials will be allowed to
join the team. Once in the team, I constantly ask them to read news
articles, and select who could best represent the role of a news anchor, and
field reporters. The rest of the members will either be scriptwriters or
video technician. Once they have been assigned already to a role, I would
now expose them on serious practices related to their role. During their
practice, writers are trained to create a broadcast script which will be
delivered in a five-minute production. It was really demanding for the kids
especially that they will have to sacrifice even their weekends just for the
practices. Good thing, the district hosted a Schools Press Conference
where we took advantage of the campus journalism seminar and training
that helped prepare our kids.

76

During the contest, what I am always doing is remind them about their
individual tasks and responsibilities. Since the creation of a broadcast
package demands so much of high technicalities. I need to remind my
spinner to check the virtual DJ program to use if it’s working. I had to
remind them they are assigned with individual tasks, but have to work as a
team, hence they need to be quick especially in news script turnaround.
Once the contest has started, they have to listen carefully with the
speaker’s speech because it has been an experience that local news is
based on the speech. If they are to take snacks, they need to be very
careful with their script, and should maintain their focus all throughout the
contest.

silang tagaan ug news paper ug diha sila mangita ug local news, national
news, international news, sports news ug entertainment news para ila i-
broadcast.)After the contest, we need to prepare ourselves for the division
levels and other higher meets. Hence, we intensify more our practices. The
pressure we feel is now even greater so we always make sure our
simulations are properly timed and are properly carried using actual
equipment used during the contest. Instead of giving them 2 hours for the
preparation of the broadcast package, I would only give them 1 ½ hour so
they will get used to working under intense pressure.

nakita naho nga naa jud potentials o journalistic skills. Ang mga bata nga
napili ni-attend ug Campus Journalism Training sa among district, ug
nindot sija kay before mi sige ug praktis naa najud sila idea. Ang mga
mga bata nga under naho ahong gepabasa ug paragraph from any
reading selection with correct pronunciation. Sa nakompleto na ag ahong
team, ni-assign nako ug kinsa tong mahimong news anchors, field
reporters ug spinner.
in-house training sila for two weeks para magsige sila ug type sa among
balay ug print. Aho pud sila gepatanaw ug videos sa radio broadcasting
77

Before the contest, I select in advance those
pupils from grades 4-6 at Union Elementary School with talents and skills
in journalism and broadcasting. Those pupils who are chosen undergo
campus journalism training sponsored by the district. Our attendance to
such seminar has helped my team especially on how to create a 5-minute
broadcast package. Other than attending journalistic seminars, I also
expose my kids on intensive practices. To assign the different roles
composing my broadcast team, I would let them read a paragraph and
watch out for their pronunciation errors and correct them immediately.
Part of the preparations is their orientation on the distinct tasks and
responsibilities accorded to each role namely the news anchors, field
reporters, scriptwriters, infomercial actors, and technical crew. We always
have to manage our time for our practices done every day and sometime
we need to spend our weekend especially when contest is fast
approaching. Two-weeks before the contest, I house them for our intensive
training and for close monitoring of their performance improvement.

mauwaw ug mahatag jud nila ilang best. Daghan ko reminders gehatag
nila kung kanus-a pwede mo-snack ug careful jud labi na ug moinum ug
tubig or juice basin majab-an ang script ug mabasa na nuon, kung mag-cr
kinahanglan dile magdungan.
During the
contest, I make sure they are not only physically ready, but also
emotionally prepared. I have to boost their self-confidence and have to let
them feel that I believe in their ability. Apart from that, I also remind them
of simple things like taking their snacks and be very careful in doing so.
Time is of the essence hence there is no room for mishaps and
miscalculated actions. They are also reminded to take note during the
speaker’s speech because it has been a practice ever since that local news
topics are taken from there.

level. Mao ra gehapon mag-sige ug praktis, mag-sige ug simulation.
Kada-praktis kinahanglan mura na ug tinud-anay.)After the contest and
we won in the IAD, we have to prepare again for the division level. So, we
level up our practice sessions, by doing several simulation activities. I
really made it sure that my contestants are given the right exposure to help
them ready for the higher level of competition. Scriptwriting is done more
seriously and intensively and time constraint is extremely observed.

Elementary School ug Silago Central School from grades 4-5 kung kinsay
78

radio broadcasting and scriptwriting team para IAD level.
Nindot sad kay dihay District-Based
Training and Workshop on Campus Journalism maong ang among mga
bata naa nay knowledge kung unsay responsibilidad nila isip us aka
student broadcaster. Kung kinsa toy naay computer sa ila, mao toy i-
assign naho mahimong writers for general and individual script ug
spinner.
intonation. Aho sila tagaan ug newspaper para magpraktis sila unsaon
pagsuwat ug news. Magsige jud ug praktis hasta gane weekends praktis
gehapon.) Before the contest, we always had a meeting with other English
teachers at Hinunangan Elementary School and Silago Central School and
decide who will be those pupils from grades 4-5 who have strong
potentials in journalism and broadcasting. Those chosen will be trained as
part of Silago district radio broadcasting and scriptwriting team to
compete for the IAD level. Part of our preparation is joining district-based
training and workshop on campus journalism which has benefited our kids
especially when it comes to the technicalities of radio broadcasting.
Another part of our preparation is the clear assignment of roles within the
team. Workshops on proper pronunciation and intonation were also done
to help improve our broadcasters. Drills on enhancing typing speed is also
done to ensure that our kids are efficient in creating their five minute radio
broadcast package. With all the needed practices to be done, we have to
sacrifice our weekends most of the time.

During the contest, I always remind them
of the basic goal why we even participated. Apart from motivating them, I
also make sure they are ready physically, mentally, and emotionally. I
keep reminding my pupils that they have to take their personal necessities
before going to the contest room to ensure optimum physical condition.
My pupils are the shy type considering the limited exposure we have, but
79

as a coach I always make sure their self-esteem are high during the
contest. One way is by making them feel that I’m with them all the way.

sila before mahuman ang duh aka-oras.Mas nag-sige mi ug simulation
para dali nalang nila ihandle ila role during the contest na.) After the
contest in IAD level, we are going back to the preparations again. This
time more tedious, and more rigid since we are already preparing for the
division level. If during the contest, pupils are given 2 hours to create their
5 minute radio broadcast, during our simulation, I made it more time-
constricted so they will be used to being pressured. We did a lot of
simulations in order for them to find things easy. I reward their good
performances by treating them with food. I often used it as a reward for
positive behavior and increased motivation.

Interviewer: What is your coaching style?

Coach 1: (Ag ahong style ma’am, kay broadcasting man ni, particular man jud ta
sa pronunciation ug intonation. Kada-mispronounce nila aho jud icorrect
dajon pero ahong pasabton ug tarung para dile sila mawad-an ug self-
confidence.) Since I’m coaching broadcasting, ma’am, I usually adhere to
giving immediate correction to pupils exhibiting mispronunciation and
improper intonation. Every mispronunciation, I immediately correct it and
explain the reason in a very firm yet friendly manner not to make the pupil
lose his/her self-confidence.

Coach 2: (Kung masajop sila sa pagpronounce sa words ahong icorrect ma’am.

Murag ingana ra man siguro.
the resources available that is why, instead of making myself appear as the
monopoly of knowledge, I let them browse sample 5-minute radio
broadcast. This I think is effective because my children would often mimic
what the broadcasters in the video are reporting. As a coach, I am also
particular with pronunciation errors. Thus, whenever I hear any
mispronunciation, I always have it corrected right there and then.

Coach 3. (Simple raman ag ahong coaching style, ma’am.

Aho jud silang tagaan ug guidance
unsaon pagbasa news nga naay impact, kinahanglan naay voice
My style of coaching is simple. I focus
on enhancing my children’s skill in pronunciation which is right I think
since we are talking about radio broadcasting. Aside from giving
immediate correction and feedback, I also see to it that the children are
guided on what to do during the entire training. I also do modeling
especially on things like voice variation, modulation, intonation, and
pronunciation.

dile na nila utrohun. Sa ahong gebuhat dile pasabot nga i-down sila;
ahong ipaage ug motivation. As a coach, ato jud tan-awn nga kung mo-
correct ta, dile ta mag-focus sa dile maajong resulta, kun di sa positive
result.Aho pud patan-awn sila daghan downloaded videos sa actual nga
radio broadcasting contest para naa sila daghan ideas nga ingnaon
diay.)As a coach, I know when to go traditional, and when to employ
technological aids. At some point, I have to show to my pupils that as a
coach I am competent and can guide them well, hence I need to correct
their errors immediately to discourage the commission of the same
mistake in the future. I also let my student broadcasters to watch various
videos of the actual radio broadcasting contest. Overall, as a coach, I am
flexible. I do not focus on the failed result, but on the positive outcome.

Coach 5: (Kung masajop sila ug pag-pronounce sa words among i-correct dajon.

sakto nga guidance para makahibaw sila sa ilang saktong buhaton.)As a
person, I hate looking into somebody’s errors, but as a coach I don’t have
a choice but to be very critical in my role. Hence, I always encourage my
pupils to strive to be perfect in doing their best. Most of the time, I do
corrective feedback and I do it so nicely. I understand very well the
fragility of a child’s emotional state. So to help my team do away with
committing mistakes, I make sure that they are well facilitated, so that
they know what they should do and what are expected of them.

Interviewer: What is/are your best practice/s as a winning coach?

81

jud sila maningkamot. Mao nay reward maka-motivate nila. Di ma
ma’am? Kada-libre nato nila ug food o i-treat sila sa restaurant, makita
jud nato unsa sila kalipay.
As a coach, I
know how to reward good and positive behavior. That is why even how
simple eating could be, I do it for the team. And you will be surprised how
happy the kids are when they know that you’re treating them with food. I
consider this as my best practice because I could really sense continuity in
the display of good behavior of children just because of this simple act.
Every time I treat them with food, or bring them in a restaurant, I can
always see the lightened and happy faces radiating from them. Some
would even say, “Ma’am, let’s eat out again after the contest if we win.”
This is one of the things I do love about being a coach.

Ug kinahanglan jud
pud ka as a coach naa jud ang discipline, labi na kay pito ka bata ang
ahong gedala.)As a coach, I always capitalize on discipline. I always
make sure that the members of the team and I are on the same page when
talking about discipline. However, I’m not the scary type really. Although
I can be very strict towards the kids, I can also be very generous and
motherly to them. Every after contest, one way to pay their efforts back is
treating them with a nice food.

na sa contest venue.)As a coach, I see to it that my pupils are updated with
the latest practice in radio broadcasting so I require them to watch news in
telivision. In fact, I make sure that we always have internet connection
every time we will have our trainings and practices. I also emphasize
discipline on my kids. At their very young age, they can be easily
distracted, so I really impose my authority when it’s time for practice
more so during preparations for higher competitions.

improvement.Kinahanglan jud pud naay constant practice para naay
mastery.) As a coach, I believe on the power of giving positive
reinforcement as an effective motivation for the kids. My contestants
already know that they will be receiving something from me after contests
that is why they will really do their best. I am also generous when it comes
to food. Every in-house training we did, they can really say to themselves
that they are well fed. After contests, I also do treat them in restaurants. I
let my student broadcasters to have in-house training for them to be
trained in typing/encoding, printing and writing news. The news anchors
were trained on how to portray their role to get the interest of the listeners.
It is also important to have constant practice so that they will master the
skills.
kanunay praktis. Kanang imo sila i-treat ug pagkaon kay best practice
baja pud na naho ma’am. Anha jud sila mokuha ug motivation para ilang
tarungon o daogon ang contest. Para jud ma-enhance ang skills sa mga
bata unsaon pagtype ug pagdeliver sa news kinahanglan jud ug constant
practice.)My best practice as a winning coach is my ability to connect
with the parents of the kids. As a coach, I believe in the importance of
parental involvement to help me either monitor or supervise their kids. As
such, I always have contact numbers with every parent or guardian of my
pupil, and that made my job easier especially when I have something to
follow up on them. I also considered treating the kids with food as my best
practice. It is also needed to have constant practice to master the skills in
typing and delivering news.

Interviewer: What are your coping strategies?

Kinahanglan jud pud
consistent ko kung unsay ahong rules labi na sa time for practice para
magseneryoso sila.)As a coach, I understand the challenge that is entailed
especially when handling a team of young individuals. Hence, I always
exercise a blend of strictness and friendliness. If I see my students are
doing great, I can be very generous to them. The moment they get
distracted or underperforming, that’s the time I reveal the other side of me.
83

easy to manage a team composed of children. Most of the time they are
unmanageable, disoriented, or worst disruptive. That is why as a coach, I
always let my pupils feel that I am friend to them, and let them understand
the idea that there is mutual respect between friends. I don’t want to be
very strict to the kids or they might develop fear and inhibitions which are
unhealthy for their development. I also encourage them to share their ideas
or suggestions because I am willing to listen.

sila always kulbaan labi na if naa silay gusto i-suggest. Gusto naho i-
sila komportable kana pud nga way mas mahatag nila ang ilang best.)As
a coach, I always make sure that I know the characteristics, and
personality of the children I am handling with. In like manner, I also want
my children to know me not just as a coach to them but as a person they
can trust. I usually welcome suggestions and ideas coming from the kids
to let them feel that they are not robots but person who won’t simply do
things because they are told to do so. Based on my experience, they liked
it best when their ideas are accepted and carried through.

Gusto naho makasabot sila sa ahong role as their mentor ug second
parent.
reward, mahikno jud ug pakan-on. It is not easy to handle seven members
for a radio broadcasting and scriptwriting contest, you need to be strict. I
always make sure that my team understand my role as their mentor at the
same time their second parent. As their mentor, I need to be firm and strict

to easily achieve our goal, but as their second parent, it is my duty to be

friendly and exude motherly care at some point in the process. I usually
talk with my contestants in a very friendly tone if deep inside I am about
to scold them because of misbehaving during training. In order for them to
behave well, I gave them reward by giving them a treat with food.

Coach 5: (Dile jud lalim modala ug mga bata nga lain-lain ug personalidad mao ng
kinahanglan jud ug naa kay high level of patience and tolerance. Usa pud
I consider patience and tolerance nga makahatag makadaog pud.
approach nimo kinahanglan pud positive ug friendly nga pamaage.)As a
coach, handling children in the team is one of the most challenging parts
of the role. What I did was I level up my patience and made myself more
tolerant to the diverse personalities of the kids. And for me, patience and
tolerance are considered keys to success. However, I know how to scold or
reprimand my kids especially if their behaviors are already becoming very
bad. Since they are still kids, I have to reprimand them in a very soft-
spoken way.
